In Salt Lake City, Utah, a woman said two police officers shot her 13-year-old son, who has Asperger syndrome. The woman, named Golda Barton, said she called police because her son was going through a crisis and specified that he was not armed. Barton said she heard the two officers, shortly after entering her home, ordering her son Linden to get out and then heard the sound of several shots. The boy, who was admitted to a Utah hospital, was reportedly injured in the shoulder, ankles and abdomen.
Golda Barton said her son’s violent crisis was due to “strong separation anxiety” as he returned to work after more than a year. At a news conference Tuesday, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks said an investigation was underway and officers believed the boy was armed. However, the police confirmed that they found no weapons in the house.
