the Covid-19 outbreak broke out in recent days a spice keeps pounding infections. If in the period of the closure the province of the extreme east of Liguria was one of the least affected areas of the region, today the situation is very different. The rise in coronavirus infections in recent days in the city of just over 90 thousand inhabitants is worrying, so much so that in the corridors of the San Bartolomeno de Sarzana hospital – the Asl 5 hospital in Liguria and a reference point in the region for the fight against Covid-19: the fear of doctors and operators of falling back into the nightmare of the dark months of March and April is spreading.
Until a few days ago, four, five or six people with coronavirus were hospitalized in the Sarzana hospital. Today there are 65 inmates (around thirty foreign citizens, the rest Italian), of whom are in intensive care. Not all are elderly with previous pathologies. The difference with the most complicated months of the pandemic also lies in the age of the patients who need hospital care. And in Sarzana there are also young people, including a 38-year-old, a 50-year-old and a 57-year-old in intensive care. Last night there were twelve new patients. The beds are not enough, so much so that this afternoon Covid is expected to convert another hospital room to have another twenty available. Meanwhile, the hospital is still open.
How the Covid outbreak in La Spezia was born
What is happening in La Spezia and its province? Liguria sees 59 new coronavirus cases on Monday, September 7, most of which in La Spezia, after eighty cases in the city and province on Sunday. This is how Governor Giovanni Toti commented on the data from new cases of coronavirus in La Spezia: “The tracking and identification of the La Spezia cluster is correct: among the 48 positive cases more than half of a foreign nationality who, last weekend, gave birth to a party in Tuscany. Eighteen are confirmed cases of Italian coexistence. There are only eight isolated cases. Therefore, the origin of what is happening in Spezia is ascertained. ” But is it really so?
The hypothesis of the La Spezia outbreak, in short, for the institutions continues to be that of a party in Marina di Carrara in which many Dominican citizens residing in the La Spezia area would have participated and later, at work or in the family , they would have spread the virus. Commenting on the news about the new cluster, Toti had launched in recent days a strong accusation towards the Tuscany Region, guilty, according to him, of not having prevented the celebration of a Dominican community, where, according to the governor, contagions would have occurred. The reference ASL (Northwest Tuscany) has already denied the hypothesis of a party in Marina di Carrara, while from the pages of the newspaper The tyrrhenian sea The testimonies of some members of the Dominican community of Carrara had arrived, to categorically deny that a party had been held: “But what a party with a thousand people. And where would it be done? Why isn’t there even a photo from this party? ”.
Whatever Toti says, the genesis of the outbreak does not appear to be clear. The most likely hypothesis is that several concatenation events may have resulted in the La Spezia cluster. And in the city, some point the finger at the party of the local soccer team, promoted to Serie A, with thousands of people taking to the streets without masks at the end of August.
The authorities are mobilizing, announcing new possible measures to contain the contagion. Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini has already repealed the ordinance that allowed music and snacks even outdoors until 10 at night, with the aim of limiting the spread of the coronavirus, given the outbreak that broke out in recent days. Instead, the Liguria region had issued the ordinance extending the obligation to wear a mask for a week to 24 hours and also outdoors. “It is time to make it clear that responsibility is needed – said the mayor – the revocation of the order is total, immediately, as soon as the situation returns to normal we will restore everything.”

Toti and the coronavirus outbreak in La Spezia
“With Mayor Peracchini we are evaluating new measures to limit the spread of the Covid-19 infection in Spezzino – writes the Governor of Liguria, Giovanni Toti -. We continue to monitor the situation of the Covid cluster in the province of La Spezia with great Attention. About ten were hospitalized, but fortunately also the first hospital discharges and most of the patients are not in worrying conditions, there is no urgency in beds of medium intensity care or in intensive care. In any case, if necessary, our medical care is ready to increase them, as well as the San Martino hub remains available to provide any support. Prevention offices are working, even with the help of a mobile unit, to track and isolate all cases and in the next few hours A mobile Genoese ASL 3 laboratory will arrive in La Spezia to continue increasing the work ”.
