The images of a massacre are those that come from Rome. There are thousands of birds on the asphalt. Many have died, others are stunned and unable to resume flight. They are mostly starlings that flew in fear in despair and crashed into power lines or into the windows of buildings throughout the historic center of Rome.
The fireworks that were staged in the Circus Maximus and the New Year’s barrels that someone detonated in the capital despite the prohibition imposed by the municipal ordinance are imputed.
In fact, Mayor Raggi had signed an ordinance prohibiting fireworks, barrels, firecrackers, rockets, and other explosive materials from 12:01 a.m. on December 31, 2020 until 24:00 on January 6, 2020. A ordinance that establishes fines of up to 500 euros and administrative seizure of explosive material for those who violate the prohibition.
Some videos posted on the web show starlings, usually perched on the piazzale dei Cinquecento in the trees in front of Termini station, flying in despair and then falling to the ground. In via Cavour, as in many other streets in the center of the capital, a carpet of birds, many dead and others unable to fly again and at risk of being run over.
Images that once again underline how much this totally human tradition hurts domestic and wild animals.
