In Milan everything gets worse

According to the latest data published by the Lombardy region, 917 new cases of coronavirus were registered in the city of Milan between Wednesday and Thursday, and in the province more than 2,000. These figures are growing compared to the previous days, and that in general confirm a trend that had already been seen in recent weeks (from October 11 to 17, the new cases registered in Milan had tripled compared to the previous week).

In Milan, however, it is not only the numbers of new positives that are worrying: hospitals are filling up at a rapid rate, the city’s intensive care, at least those in public facilities, is increasingly under pressure, contact trackingAccording to the same medical director of ATS Milan, Vittorio Demicheli, it has failed completely, and now there is talk of a possible “red zone”.

On Thursday Massimo Galli, virologist and director of the department of Infectious Diseases of the Sacco hospital (Milan), said Agora in Tai3 that “now we are about to have it, the battle of Milan, which was saved by the punctuality of the confinement last time”.

In Milan, the situation, already worrying last week, has worsened considerably in recent days. The first thing that was omitted was the contact tracking, that is, the ability to trace the contacts of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. The Milan ATS can count on 150 tracer, which, however, for more than a week have been overwhelmed by the rise of new positivity, including several “school cases”, that is, positive students, the longest to rebuild. Several family doctors listened Send They said that today they are the ones who isolate the contacts of the positive, long before the health authority intervenes, which often arrives late. Many people who have tested positive for the swab test are contacted by tracer of the ATS many days after confirmation of positivity, effectively making the activity of contact tracing, that should stop the chains of contagion in time before they get out of hand.

In Milan, several cracks are also beginning to be noticed in the diagnostic chain, that is, in the waiting times for the swab. Until a couple of weeks ago, swabs could be performed in one or two days, also thanks to the possibility that ATS Milan makes available to family doctors to reserve the swab directly for their patients through a special portal. Today it is no longer like that and the topics have been expanded.

The situation has also worsened significantly in hospitals. The Milanese structures that had been identified to host COVID-19 patients, including Polyclinic, Niguarda, San Paolo and Sacco, have almost completely filled their intensive care units, that is, the departments reserved for the most seriously ill.

For several days, Milanese hospitals, with full beds, have begun to transfer patients with COVID-19 to other hospitals in Lombardy (however, there is a plan to further increase the places in intensive care). The system has come under even greater pressure due to some outbreaks within hospitals. In the Galeazzi hospital, for example, there are 21 positive cases among health and administrative workers, and another dozen people in quarantine because they are considered “close contacts”. In recent days there have also been several positive aspects in the Cardiology department of the Sacco hospital, where now the situation seems to be nevertheless under control.

Therefore, on Thursday the regional government decided to reopen the Fiera hospital, which had been temporarily closed at the end of the first wave and which has about two hundred beds. The reopening was ahead of the calendar set in June by the Lombardy region, which called for a gradual increase in the number of beds for COVID-19 patients in Lombardy hospitals. The first transfers to the facilities will take place today, Friday, October 23.

Another worrying situation is being observed at the Pio Albergo Trivulzio, one of the most famous health centers for the elderly in Milan that had already had many deaths from coronavirus last spring. At the Pio Albergo Trivulzio, a structure that was then the center of an investigation by the Milan prosecutor’s office, 14 guests tested positive, after screening tests carried out in the week of October 12-16, as well as 5 employees. In a note released by the institute, we read that “given the increase in the epidemic curve in Milan, admissions to intermediate care are temporarily suspended until October 25 and gyms in the inpatient sections are temporarily closed.”

Taking into account the difficult situation in Milan, there has been talk of a possible “red zone”, which would be added to the regional curfew in force as of Thursday, October 22. At the moment, however, no decision has been made and there are different ideas about it.

Marco Trivelli, director general of the Lombardy Department of Social Welfare, told RaiNews24 not to rule out any measures in the event of a further worsening of the contagion curve, including the imposition of some kind of “red zone”. On Thursday Sandra Zampa, Undersecretary of Health, said a 24Mattino on Radio 24 that at the moment there would be no conditions for a decision of this type, and recalled that the eventual establishment of a “red zone” must be decided by the mayor together with the president of the region, or by the government “taking commissioner ».
