On Saturday, parts of the Guatemalan Parliament building in Guatemala City were vandalized and set on fire by anti-government protesters who have been protesting for days against the budget law passed Wednesday. There were no injuries – the building was empty during the demonstration – but several people inhaled smoke from the fire, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
According to the opposition, the budget law was approved to favor companies that have ties to the government and to which large construction projects have been contracted, neglecting the economic and social effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Protesters are also protesting cuts in education and health, as well as the timing of the budget law, passed as the country grappled with damage from hurricanes Eta and Iota. The protesters demand the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei.
