Yenia Bonavera died last night in the Garibaldi hospital – Catania city center. The girl was 24 years old and was originally from Messina. In 2017 she had been the protagonist of terrible news: the ex-boyfriend had tempted to kill her by setting her on fire. It had caused 13% burns to his body. After the complaint the girl had retracted, stating that it was not the ex-partner who set her on fire.

The girl showed up last night, December 9, 2020, at the hospital with a stab in the shoulder. However, the causes of death have not yet been determined. The hospital confirmed the death by communicating that the girl’s body is in the morgue awaiting the autopsy ordered by the Judicial Power. From the toxicological tests, the victim tested positive for cocaine and therefore the hypothesis that death occurred by overdose is not ruled out. The young woman was in Catania for work: The capital’s mobile team is also investigating the events.

The 2017 aggression

In 2017 the victim’s ex-partner had tried to set her on fire with gasoline, causing her first and second degree burns. His desire to defend his partner caused a great stir in public opinion. He went to trial for perjury because investigations had established the man’s responsibilities. In fact, the attacker was sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder, penalty that in January last year was reduced to 10 years. Ylenia did not want to tell the true dynamics of the events because she was 3 months pregnant and after the attack she lost her baby.

After the terrible news that led to a final sentence in 2018, Ylenia was forced to leave home and was escorted to a shelter in the Catania area. Ylenia seemed to have rebuilt a new life, but last night came the sad end. The story continues to have dark contours, as the injury suffered could be compatible with a stab wound. The dynamics of the events and the cause of death have yet to be determined.
