By Matteo salvini the day of the first hearing of the Gregoretti boat case. The process will open in early October, with a considerable delay compared to the initial schedule due to postponements after the coronavirus emergency.
The accusations against the leader of the League are particularly serious: kidnapping of more than 100 migrants who stayed on board the ship for 6 days and rejection of official documents, the crime of public officials.
In addition to heavy penalties and the risk of ineligibility, Salvini is also concerned about an unfair trial, especially after the Palamara talk scandal, where Salvini was “targeted” by the judiciary. But a few days before the hearing she spoke Nunzio Sarpietro, Judge of Catania who will take charge of the case: Salvini “You will find a third and above all calm judge, stripped of all prejudice, who will guarantee you a fair and equitable trial, like any other citizen”.
Gregoretti case: for Salvini the countdown to the trial begins
“I don’t do politics. Senator Salvini need not worry “These are the words of Judge Sarpietro, who in 10 days will start the trial for the Gregoretti case, which sees the leader of the League accused of the kidnapping (more aggravated) of 130 migrants, between women and minors.
On July 20, the Catania court of ministers had requested authorization to proceed against the former Interior Minister to the Senate Board of Immunity and, after several postponements by Covid-19, the day of the hearing is behind the corner: from October 1 to 3 Catania will be presided over by rallies, events and demonstrations organized by Lega and Fratelli d’Italia in support of Salvini, who for his part declares to have acted for “Defend national borders”.
The judge has already started to study the papers and wishes to reiterate his strangeness to the Palamara scandal, a sad page for the entire judiciary.
What Salvini risks
If the audience recognized his guilt, the former Minister of the Interior would risk prison from 3 to 12 years in application of article 605 of the Penal Code: Aggravated kidnapping the presence of minors on board.
To this could be added the accusation of “Rejection and omission of official documents” (Article 328 of the Penal Code) for having rejected orders from the Authorities without valid justification; for this crime he risks prison from 6 months to 2 years.
In addition to imprisonment, the sentence would imply the application of the Severino Law and therefore the fire and ineligibility in the next elections.
