“If so, my wife would agree”

For days we have been talking about who will be the new Calabrian health commissioner, after three commissioners have resigned in recent weeks: first Saverio Cotticelli and Giuseppe Zuccatelli, following so many media cases, and then Eugenio Gaudio, just one day since their appointment. Gaudio, who is a doctor and former rector of the Sapienza University of Rome, had explained to Republic that his resignation was due to “personal and family reasons”, explaining that his wife “has no intention of moving to Catanzaro”.

In recent days, several names have been made for the next commissioner, although the government has yet to make a final decision. Among them is Agostino Miozzo, current coordinator of the government’s technical-scientific committee for the health emergency. Interviewed during the broadcast of Radio24 24 Mattino, the journalist Simone Spetia asked Miozzo if he had received a proposal from the government, and Miozzo, without confirming anything, responded saying that his wife would have nothing against it, referring to Alegría’s resignation:

“Since we’ve been talking about it since last night, [mia moglie] He terrified me saying “don’t let me mention the fact that I have something against Calabria”. If so, you will agree.

The regional health department has been commissioned since 2009 due to enormous debt and deep infiltration by organized crime. Meanwhile, the region has managed to re-enter its debts but has effectively dismantled its health system, by far the worst of the Italian regions: the region was included in the “red zones” decided by the government to contain the coronavirus pandemic although it had a negligible number of infections compared to other Italian regions. However, the regional health system has been collapsing for several weeks.
