“If it continues like this, it runs the risk of declining”, the three challenges to save leadership – Libero Quotidiano

After the regional vote, the moment of decisions has come for Salvini, now that the “shoulder” of the government has not been there. His leadership within the party is not in doubt, but it has now become clear that, without a redefinition of political objectives and strategies, that “National League” project is destined to be lost. There are three, in my opinion, the key points. The first is that of alliances. You win in a coalition or you don’t win, no matter how much you are the first party. The problem, then, is whether Salvini wants to be the leader not only of his party, but of a coalition; if, in other words, he knows how to organize a political “synthesis” of the different souls and interests of his allies, from the Brothers of Italy to what remains of Forza Italia. So far, it must be admitted, it has not been. If Berlusconi is to be awarded historical merit, it is certain that it could have existed in 1994 the leader of a party varied politics, having “constitutionalized” the former fascists and, at the same time, having convinced the League of the time to effectively abandon “secessionism” to enter the institutional political game.

Salvini, so far, has been unsuccessful in all of this and, truth be told, has not even tried to implement it. Now you can and should. The captain faces the captain, both the playmaker and not the striker. Second point: ideas. Salvini does not seem to have understood yet that with the pandemic and the national emergency that followed, as of last March, his “slogans” – “security” and “immigration” – have totally lost their effectiveness. After Covid-19, “immigration” is no longer a political issue, that is, something to build consensus on. And “security”, like health security, has become one of the government’s strengths, or perhaps even the only one. Salvini was displaced and has not yet been able to renew his songs. And this is the challenge he faces: that of having the strength, and the courage, to put the new current problems on the table.

ALTERNATIVE FORCE
If the National League wants to be an alternative governing force, it must begin to think and present a real political platform that positions itself on the real issues that will be at stake from now until the end of the legislature: the problem of work, economic recovery , a productive North strangled by taxes and a South entrusted to the well-being of citizens, income, autonomy, climate and the environment, schools, universities. And need specific programs, and nothing but slogans. You can’t do everything alone, you have a lot of competent people around you – build a team that involves not just your party members. Finally, the third point, of a strategic nature. Salvini must realize that, after Covid-19, her own the landmarks were impressed: not only, as mentioned, his “slogans”, but also what, in terms of legitimacy, represented by the closeness to Putin’s Russia and his attitude of rupture with respect to the European Union.

I'm not calling Conte to trial. Gregoretti, Salvini has a new ace up his sleeve: fear at Palazzo Chigi

Of course, it is not about moving from one group to another in the European Parliament. Rather, it is about being willing to discuss everything, in Italy and in Europe, without ideological prejudice, to serve the interests of Italians. The health emergency makes the problem of “negotiation” with the European Union, the role of Italy within the Union, the central problem. Just think about the question of the MES or the Recovery Fund. It is in Europe where it is played today. And it is here that Salvini must also begin to play his game, demonstrating the specificity of a League, critical of the Union’s neoliberal policies, but also far from any nationalist illusions. The League is not nationalist, nationalism is contrary to its nature, the League of Salvini is sovereign in that “weak” sense, indicated in the last political congress. Without resolving these three troublesome questions, Salvini risk more than to lose the leadership of his party, drag the latter into slow decline. It is a risk that derives from a single underlying weakness: that of not having yet fully understood the political consequences of the pandemic, and of wanting to continue being the Salvini of the summer of a year ago. However, in the meantime everything has changed, and that is why the answer to the three questions I have presented can no longer be postponed.
