BELLUNO – He does not remember anything about that terrible shock, in his mind there was only the moment when he made that decision: to accept a step that changed his life. A year ago, on the morning of September 1, 2019, she went up with her friend Cristian Gabriele Palazzolo (the same age who died on impact), in the Fiat 500 driven by Mattia Vascellari. Deborah De Col she was then 17 years old and had a wonderful smile. Today she is of legal age, she has fought between life and death, she has undergone 28 operations, she no longer has her right leg and she runs the risk of losing her left as well, but she has not lost that smile. Agree to tell her story to help other children avoid making the same mistakes she did.
What do you remember from that night?
“I don’t even remember getting in the car. The last flash is outside the “Mon amour” club in Belluno. I had arrived there with another company, but I had no one to take me home, to Ponte nelle Alpi, I met my friend Cristian: she told me that they were going to Longarone in that Fiat 500 and that she could accompany me. Since then I have canceled everything.
If I came back, would you make the same choice?
“I want to tell what happened to me so that my colleagues avoid making decisions, like the one I made that night. If I came back, I would call my mother: boys, never get in a car with people you don’t know.
Off-road car at dawn: 19-year-old died instantly, 4 very serious friends
BELLUNO – Tragedy on the road at dawn in the Belluno area: at 6:50 am, the firefighters intervened on the SS 50 in Belluno for the autonomous exit of a car in which 5 young people were traveling. A boy, born in 2000, Gabriele Palazzolo, died and four other young people, all friends, were seriously injured.
From this accident you have suffered very serious injuries that you are still treating, how has your life changed?
“Everything has changed: habits, cities. Now I live in Bologna with my mother and her partner where I continue my treatment. What I did before has totally changed: my life is now a function of treatment, I listen to the orthopedist almost every day. I was lucky to meet a professional who really has the right experience, but also humanity: Dr. Roberto Bevoni from Bologna. And even earlier I was lucky enough to be treated by the vascular vessels at the Treviso hospital: they saved my life.
What do you remember when you woke up in Ca ‘Foncello?
“At first they didn’t even show me my legs, then I had two. When I woke up I knew about Cristian: it really made me stop and reflect on life. But right after that I had to decide on amputation. That leg was almost dead, I didn’t move it, and when the doctors told me that I could risk my life for septicemia, I cried for the first three hours and then I decided: “Bring me in and amputate me.” A month later he was out of the hospital. Now, after 28 operations, I will have to undergo two more joint surgeries. Then, once the bone is in place, there will be other plastic surgery operations.
Is it true that after your amputation you were contacted by important Paralympic champions?
“Yep, Bebe Vio and Andrea Silvestroni. Andrea and Bebe sent me a voice message and Bebe’s mother came to visit me in Treviso twice. It was heartwarming – it’s not just the champions we see on television who have won their challenge. They put their group at my disposal. Bebe explained to me what the world would be like after the amputation, with warmth and humanity, but also with a smile, vitality and irony.
Will you also do sports in the future?
«Because of my leg, with the fixative, I am very limited and the limb that remains gives me pain, it continues to calcify. But for the one with the prosthesis he could go and do anything. Sport will be part of my life and I will also have to do it to prevent osteoarthritis from coming to me when I am still young. Before the accident I did 3 years of Rugby, but now I think swimming is for me ».
What do you mean the guy who was driving the car?
“Nothing for him, because no words are needed to understand what he has created for all of us. I’m sorry you never thought to apologize. We met at the Treviso hospital where we were both hospitalized and he turned the other way. Then his mother came and told me that he wanted to write to me many times, but I didn’t see anything. To my colleagues, on the other hand, I want to say that it is not a risk to have fun, if it is done with your head and never trust someone you do not know. Always try to call a parent or a taxi – never accept trips from people you don’t know to avoid the mistake I made. It is true that I made the mistake, but also the pilot as he took 4 boys in a car, two of them minors, finishing directly against a post ».
How do you see your future?
“It seems strange, but after moving here to Bologna I see it better because of the possibilities that exist and the people. It will certainly be a different life than I imagined a year ago, but I will also do many things that I never thought I would do before. I want to thank my mother, Consuelo Boato, her partner, Mauro Anzolut, my lawyer Martino Fogliato, my relatives Davide Boschiero and Wally De Luca, two friends Jessica and Alisea, the doctors at the Treviso hospital, especially the vascular ones, and my orthopedist “.
