Embittered. Adele Di Costanzo is 27 years old, she is a young doctor from Conegliano who lives and works in Vicenza. He did not expect that a simple post on social media inviting his colleagues not to underestimate the covid could trigger an aggressive reaction towards it. “I am very bitter.” This is not a good time for doctors. In the first wave of the pandemic, they were considered heroes. Sentiment has changed in recent months. The sentence has been reversed. At least in those groups (deniers) that accuse them of hiding the truth and practicing forms of “medical terrorism”. On the other hand, they recently ended up heavily in the crosshairs of a citizen like Donald Trump who ruled: “They make more money if someone dies from Covid.”
“More respect”
Dr. Di Costanzo tested positive on October 19. Severe headache, fever rose to forty in a few hours. The next day she ended up in the hospital: “She was very ill, she needed oxygen to breathe.” His story was published two weeks later. He says he felt the need when he saw photos of largely illegal Halloween parties on Instagram with a massive presence of youth without masks and social distancing. The news of vandalism in many Italian squares against the confinement, reported by the national media, convinced her to approve the act. «I am a person who makes the practice of healthy life a philosophy of life: eat well and with balance, practice sports. Before October 19 I was fine. My ID says I’m 27 years old. I tried to remember and explain in my post that the virus not only affects the elderly, it does not only harm certain sectors of the population. I needed oxygen, I have been locked in the house for two weeks. What did I write? That we need to have more education and respect for others ”.
“You are not even a doctor”
The message sparked a reaction. The doctor was the target. Crimes, ironies. “The deniers attacked me, those who say that everything is lies, that the virus was created by art. They also questioned that I am a doctor given my age, in short, they made me pass as a liar, one who wants to show off. They wrote that it was impossible for me to feel bad about my selfie in the hospital. Most have attacked me just because I’m a doctor. The heaviest accusation is that we didn’t save people, we ruined them. She repeats it once more: “I’m bitter.” Confidence is lacking.
Photomodel to pay for your studies
Di Costanzo works in the Usca (special care contact units), treating patients affected by the virus at home or in nursing homes. He saw many sick people, including a two-year-old girl. Unlike many of her peers who live at home with their parents despite being of legal age, she lives alone. He has always sought financial independence. To support herself, at 18 she worked as a model and participated in a Miss Italia pre-final in Jesolo. “I was a girl – he smiles – it seems to me a very distant time”. As a doctor she came up with this idea from the deniers: “During the first phase there was terror in the population fueled by something that was not known. The fear then turned into a kind of boredom, especially in the younger ones. The difficulty of adapting to the dramatic situation of the pandemic prevailed. I think there was a feeling of self defense that led to denial. The confinement could have been avoided if the rules had been respected. The doctor is still positive. Wait for the swab result. I’d like to go back to work. I am only saddened by the growing lack of trust in doctors.
