The words that, at night, the Councilor for Wellbeing and Vice President of the Lombard Board, Letizia Moratti, confided to her Twitter profile are emblematic: “The insufficiency of Aria Lombardia by not being able to manage the reserves in a dignified way slows the common effort vaccinate. It is unacceptable! Thanks to the operators who do everything possible to vaccinate 30,000 people a day and thanks to the Lombard citizens for their patience. Unmistakable words that weigh like a stone. And they confirm the line already taken by the Region: abandon the system developed by Aria and go to another one from Poste Italiane. The announcement was on March 8 and there was talk of “about ten days” to change. At that time, there were already too many hitches: like older people who the system fixed the appointment miles and miles from the house.
The misunderstandings in Cremona, Como and Monza
The first news of the morning gave the mess in Cremona, in the axis of the Fair: 500 people expected, 80 text messages sent, resulting in a “hole” of 420 doses without people to vaccinate them. Asst began calling people and mayors directly to send a list of people to contact, thus exhausting the “gap” that had arisen and ending up vaccinating 1,100 people, of which 638 with Pfizer and 472 with AstraZeneca. Then the news also spread to other places with the same problem: in Monza and Lecco, in particular, the confusion created a “void” of hundreds of missed appointments, belonging in this case mostly to school personnel. People who were waiting but who had not received confirmation of the appointment and therefore had not shown up. In Asst Lariana, 700 doses were ready, but 16 appeared: the Sant’Anna hospital then reviewed the list of those who had the right to vaccinate about 300 people with AstraZeneca.
In Monza, at Hospital Vecchio, on Saturday morning no one had shown up to receive the 400 doses of AstraZeneca ready for the school staff. The Auser lists related to kindergartens, civil protection and volunteers were contacted and teachers were also welcomed who, upon learning of the problem, came spontaneously to be vaccinated. In the New Hospital, on the other hand, there was no error: inoculations of 900 doses began and continued according to the scheduled appointments.
The political push against Aria
If on the vaccines front the problem was therefore solved with emergency calls, on the political front the fight was inevitable. The anticipation on the afternoon of Friday 19, the day that AstraZeneca was resumed after the precautionary stop, with the regional councilor of the Democratic Party Pietro Bussolati who had already received complaints of missing confirmation text messages: “When the vaccines with AstraZeneca were resumed of teachers in vaccination centers the chaos is great. Aria’s reservation system did not send the confirmation sms and therefore the administration schedule was skipped ”, he complained.
On Saturday morning, in the face of the explosion of chaos, the leader of the Democratic Party in Pirellone Fabio Pizzul asked the regional leaders to explain “to the Lombards what is happening with the vaccine reserves. As Prime Minister Mario Draghi said forcefully, the delays of the Regions are no longer tolerable. “There is only one thing left to do now: President Draghi, Minister Speranza and General Figliuolo immediately lifted the Lombard vaccination campaign at the hands of Fontana, Bertolaso, Moratti and Aria,” Niccolò Carretta, Action Regional Councilor, wrote on Facebook.
