The 42-year-old motorist Eraldo Dotto was arrested by the carabinieri and is under house arrest at his home in Carrù. Three other tourists were also injured: a German couple (transported by rescue helicopter to Cuneo, they are not in danger of death) and a Belgian citizen, always hospitalized in the Verduno hospital, who was staying in an accommodation in Asti. The driver of the truck, a hauler, is under investigation for highway homicide and very serious personal injury.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday to validate the detention in the Asti Court and the direct trial. The prosecutor also requested the results of the breath test and blood tests to verify whether he was drunk or high at the time of the accident. The result is not yet known. The crime of homicide on the road has a penalty of between 2 and 18 years.
Immediately after the accident, the carabinieri saved him from the attempted lynching of some witnesses who had witnessed the scene. Arrived at high speed in Piazza Umberto I, in the city center, an area full of discos and bars, where there is a speed limit of 30 km / h, the man would have been repeatedly invited to slow down by some traders, responding from the car with vulgar gestures.
Then he lost control of the vehicle, which skidded several times, damaging the area of the “Da Tino” wine cellar protected by a low wall and ending its journey after overwhelming tourists.
