FLORENCE. Two suitcases with human remains, perhaps of an adult male, of white ethnicity, open a new mystery in Florence. On Saturday in forensic medicine there will be an autopsy ordered by the prosecutor Ornella Galeotti, but we are talking about a human trunk, already in a state of ‘saponification’ – which was in the first suitcase found on the land owned by a farmer on Thursday afternoon. – and lower limbs, legs, less decomposed in a first external examination – which were in the second suitcase found nearby by the carabinieri on Friday, after a more extensive patrol. We learn that the main path will be that of DNA, at least in this initial phase. The data will be placed in a police database. But it must also be established whether the remains are of a single person or of two different ones. Needle in the haystack also checks the missing persons reports – too many people going missing every year. The clues for now are few.
In the first suitcase, a kind of cloth wrapped the remains. In the second there is a kind of jacket. They are the only materials available that seem to emerge from early research. The containers themselves are anonymous, low quality, they would not be useful signals. Therefore, only the horror movie scene remains safe, initiated on Thursday by a fortuitous discovery. The owner of the agricultural land, after the rains of the last days, had proposed to remove the weeds that had accumulated near a fence because they caused unwanted rains in the field. And so, cleaning that marginal area, he noticed the first suitcase and when he opened it he alerted the police. This morning, in sunlight, the discovery of the second suitcase, not far away, by the military. Both suitcases were left in the same area, that is, between the outer perimeter of the Sollicciano prison and the Florence-Pisa-Livorno motorway. The second was closer to the flyover ramp than to the level of the highway.
Precisely from the four-lane road -so another hypothesis circulates, yet to be proven-, it could have been thrown by someone in a car, stopped for the short time necessary to dispose of the body. The same goes for the first suitcase. Otherwise, to carry the suitcases there, the alternative is that the author or authors of the gesture have traveled a local road near the prison, but for now it would seem a route less considered by the investigators. Findings after noon are explained with other inspections today to look for any traces. But nothing else would emerge than the extraordinary contents of the two suitcases. The remains and their state of conservation, however, recall from the archives a find that occurred on January 1, 2015 in the countryside of Scandicci, the neighboring municipality: at that time, it was the body in an advanced state of decomposition of a woman which ended up inside an abandoned artesian well, near Castelpulci. A municipal employee found him looking for an illegal dump. The investigations allowed the identification: it was the body of a Georgian who disappeared in the Florentine in February of the previous year, eleven months before.
