The Mose was not operational yesterday and Venice sank. The maximum peak stopped at 138 centimeters at 3.30 p.m., against the forecasts that indicated the maximum possible peak at 125 (the doors only go up with forecasts of 130 onwards). “Contingent causes – as Mayor Luigi Brugnaro explained yesterday – and the unexpected reinforcement of the Croatian wind” have put the city and its system of mobile barriers under control. It is a fact that has generated much criticism and the request of the mayor himself to review the control room and facilitate faster protocols for the management of the mobile dam system.
High water at 135-140
Last night the gates were raised against a forecast of 125-130 centimeters at 9.30 this morning (the maximum peak then stopped at 123), now Venice is preparing, according to the provisions of the Municipal Tidal Center, for three days of high water important. Tomorrow at 8 in the morning the peak should be 135 centimeters, for Friday and Saturday, respectively, at 7.55 and 8.35 in the morning, maximum peaks of 140 centimeters are expected.
The administrator Cinzia Zincone explained to Ansa that according to the estimates of the bulletin that foresees high tide for the whole week, the floodgates of the Mose could remain up for three days in a row. “We are trying to calibrate the openings and closings in the best way. – He explained, also anticipating a table to analyze what happened yesterday and make, if necessary, important changes in the procedures for activating the Mose.
The problems of the port
With the barrier system active, probably for three consecutive days, the difficulties that the port is experiencing (and will continue to experience) are great. “The port of Venice is going through very difficult hours – explains the extraordinary commissioner of the port authority Pino Musolino – since it does not have access to the sea in the presence. Only this morning we had 8 boats in the port and 9 in the lagoon waiting to leave. Tomorrow, in light of the forecasts that have been communicated to us, we foresee that a dozen ships will have to change their schedules so as not to be stopped. Unfortunately, everything that we had envisioned in recent years is being realized: without a functioning navigation basin that allows boats to enter and exit the lagoon, even with the Mose barriers raised, the ports of Venice and Chioggia cannot last long and they are destined to lose competitiveness and, consequently, orders and employment ”.
Comment by Cipriani
Harry’s Bar owner Arrigo Cipriani also spoke on the great Mose topic. “The great scandal – he told AdnKronos – is that this work, which costs more than 6 billion euros, is designed to work with water over 110 centimeters high, and it was not noticed that even at this level it is part from Piazza San Marco. , and especially the basilica, plunge into the water. Yesterday the forecasts were also wrong, it was known that the tide would rise again, compared to the first indications. For this reason, in the control room, where you decide, you have to change: there must be experts who make decisions more quickly.
