Italy will be the presidency of the G20 in 2021. The Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, speaking virtually on the second day of the session, he spoke about the priorities in the international health response, also with an eye toward the world after COVID-19. “We have to build a sustainable future,” Conte said.
G20, Italy guarantor of universal access to the vaccine
“At such a critical time for the entire world, the Saudi presidency has been able to lead global efforts with determination and unity of purpose. Italy prepares to assume the presidency of the g20 on December 1, inaugurating a new year of work that will build on the legacy that Saudi Arabia now leaves us“Conte said in the video message.
The prime minister said that Italy is aware of the scope of responsibility and the difficulty of the task, especially due to a “pandemic that has caused and continues to cause immense suffering to humanity”, with “Significant” blows inflicted “on the world economy”.
For this Italy will act as guarantor of “universal and equal access to vaccines”. The issues of the international health response will also be addressed in synergy with the World Health Summit, which Italy will host next year.
Conte, three pillars to build a sustainable future
But we must also “look beyond the emergency,” Conte said. And therefore “Promote sustainable recovery, inclusive, resilient ”.
The program of the Italian presidency will focus on three pillars: people, planet, prosperity.
Hence some medium and long-term objectives:
- restore the balance between people and nature
- female empowerment
- address poverty, old and new inequalities
- facilitate the energy transition
- fight climate change
- Take advantage of the immense opportunities that digitization offers.
- strengthen the world trading system
Building a better future is only possible if we all work together, Conte concluded.
