Crowded historic center of Verona on weekends (Marchiori)
Today new summit between the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, and the majority heads of delegation on the anti-Covid Christmas squeeze: all Italy is supposed to be in the red zone from Eva to Befana or on January 3, or only on holidays and the eve of holidays. The River meeting that took place yesterday was not conclusive.
The government, according to executive sources, is evaluating the possibility of an exception to the travel ban between municipalities – and possibly also within the same Municipality in case of restoration of the red zone – for the closest relatives on the occasion of dinner and lunch on Christmas Eve on the 25th. The exception, in any case, would affect a very small number of family members: two, according to the same sources. This is a derogation that would also attend the requests made by the administrators of the League during these hours.
Also scheduled today a new meeting between the government and the regions. Meanwhile, the swab positivity ratio fell to 8.8%. The first Italians will be vaccinated immediately after Christmas, if the EMA gives the green light to Pfizer’s drug on December 21.
CLOSING FOR TWO WEEKS: THE HYPOTHESIS. The government is preparing the bind for the Christmas season even if the hypotheses are still on the table. The first is the one supported by the “penalty shooters”, that is, a red zone for all of Italy from December 24 to January 6, even if the most likely compromise foresees an Italy in red from December 24 to 27 and from December 31 to January 3, eight days in total in which all the regulations already in force in the red regions would be valid: any prohibited movement, not only within and outside the region but also within the municipality of residence, except for proven work needs, health reasons or situations of necessity. And all stores (except grocery stores and pharmacies), as well as restaurants, bars, pubs, ice cream parlors and patisseries would be closed. In fact, it is possible to leave home alone for physical activity, but “in the immediate vicinity of the house” or sports activity “individually”.
Then there is another milder hypothesis that provides the establishment of an orange zone for the whole of Italy from Christmas Eve to Befana or, alternatively, the days before the holidays, that is, December 24, 31 and January 2. The measures envisaged in this band would make it possible to block travel outside the municipality itself and close bars and restaurants -two of the interventions invoked by technicians to avoid lunches, dinners and gatherings in homes or discos- while stories remain open.
