Sesto Fiorentino (Florence), September 16, 2020 – Perhaps for some reason he climbed onto the edge of the pool. Maybe he was just playing. So a bad foot, a risky move, or simply a surface that is too slippery, could have caused the very bad fall. There are only hypotheses, at the moment, about the dynamics of the terrible domestic accident which, yesterday afternoon, resulted in the death of a 12 year old boy, Pietro C., in Sesto Fiorentino.
It was the mother who began to suspect the anomalous silence that reigned in the house. And be alarmed to hear that the son did not answer. Then the rush from room to room in the house, until find him in the bathroom, lying on the floor, next to the tub.
The tragedy took place around 4.30 p.m. yesterday in a fairly isolated house in the Querceto hills. Here Pietro lived with his parents, both renowned and esteemed doctors from the Torregalli hospital, and an older brother. A serene family, which had just resumed its normal daily life consisting of school and work (the child was attending secondary school) after months of chaos due to the pandemic and the summer period.
Yesterday, however, a domestic accident that apparently could seem trivial (again based on the first hypotheses about what happened) caused the worst of tragedies. Impossible to say exactly what happened, since the boy was alone in the bathroom of his house. According to the first reconstructions it seems that he slipped and fell badly, hitting his head. The truth is that the boy’s mother, distrustful of his silence, began to call him, and then ran to the bathroom to review the situation. After unsuccessfully trying to open the door, he only managed to get in through a window and found him lying on the ground, unconscious. Being a doctor, the woman immediately tried all possible resuscitation maneuvers, but unfortunately without being able to save her son. Meanwhile, the alarm went off at the 118 emergency center that sent the Misericordia di Calenzano nursing ambulance, together with the Pegaso helicopter, to Sesto Fiorentino. The rescue helicopter – as some witnesses tell us – flew over the area for several minutes to look for a possible space in which to land: at the end it went down to a nearby olive grove, from where the health workers arrived at the house accompanied by a patrol from the Municipal police.
But the helicopter left empty late at night, as Pietro unfortunately had nothing else to do. The traumas reported in the fall were actually too serious and, in the end, the doctors who intervened were left with nothing but declaring death. In the place, in addition to the agents of the Municipal Police of Sesto Fiorentino, the carabinieri of the station and of the Signa company arrived and then the companions of the Forensics.
Now it will be up to the investigations to try to reconstruct with more precision what happened in the moments that preceded the fall and death. The magistrate ordered an autopsy. For the moment, however, everything seems to lead to the hypothesis of a domestic accident, unfortunately with the worst results. The boy, slipping, would have hit himself violently on the head, causing a head injury that killed him. Yesterday the news of the drama that took place in Sesto Fiorentino quickly spread to an area where the family, although quite reserved, is known and appreciated. Even on social networks, many have asked for news and left thoughts for the parents and relatives of the little boy so treated by such an absurd tragedy.
