During search activities inside the suspect’s house, thanks to the valuable collaboration of a canine unit of the Arma, an envelope containing 133 grams of already dried marijuana was immediately found, which however constituted only a small part of it. that would be found soon after.
In fact, once it was discovered by the military, the man could not help pointing out a shed not far from the house, inside which an additional 135 marijuana plants had been placed to dry, for a total gross weight of about 4 kilograms. However, what the Carabinieri did not expect to find were more than 50 bullet cartridges that were never reported to public security authorities and were therefore illegally detained. In confirmation of the man’s “passion” for weapons and after the search was extended to a second home in its use, 51 additional cartridges of different calibers and more than 3 kilograms of illegally detained gunpowder were found and seized. However, what aroused even more astonishment among the military involved in the investigation was the discovery of a hand grenade of the “pineapple” type, probably attributable to a remnant of World War II, with a security device inserted regularly and in good condition. and even seven bullets of great caliber, used for weapons of light artillery or antiaircraft warfare and obviously illegally possessed.
During the controls carried out by the military, a semiautomatic pistol, a 36-gauge shotgun, a 12-gauge shotgun and two carbines were also found, as well as 700 cartridges of different calibers, in this case all usually in the hands of the suspect, which were nevertheless withdrawn. For caution. In accordance with art. 39 Tulps, along with the personal firearms license, in order to verify if the man still has the necessary requirements for his arrest. The 43-year-old was arrested on charges of detention for the purpose of selling drugs and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition for war, as well as detention under house arrest pending the validation hearing.
But the activity of the military was not yet finished, since, in the same land where the marijuana plants had been identified, numerous cages with animals of different species were noticed inside, which is why the immediate intervention of the personnel specialist of the Massa Carabinieri Forest Station, which once arrived, proceeded to recognize an American aquatic turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans), 20 tortoises and 6 Japanese nightingales (Leiothrix lutea), the latter being considered an endangered exotic species of extinction and therefore protected by international regulations.
Subsequently, numerous cages were found inside which were kept 6 specimens of birds belonging to non-hunting fauna species (2 frosoni, 3 goldfinches and 1 finch) and another 15 decoy birds (11 thrushes and 4 blackbirds) irregular due to lack of the provided identification ring. In another 25 thrushes and 6 ringed blackbirds, more checks are being carried out to establish their legitimate paternity. At the end of the activity, the suspect proceeded to criminally seize the 20 tortoises and the specimen of the American aquatic turtle, as well as the six Japanese nightingales and all the identified birds. It is recognized that the turtle specimens were entrusted to the Cras-WWF “L’assiolo” Center in Ronchi, while the non-hunting birds were immediately released into the wild. Also for these behaviors, sanctioned by the sectoral regulations on the application of the international convention on trade in threatened animal species as well as the protection of wildlife, the suspect must answer for the crimes of illegal possession of animals.
During this morning, the judge of preliminary inquiries of the Massa court confirmed the man’s arrest, ordering the precautionary measure of house arrest with an electronic bracelet against him.
