Pfizer vaccine, anaphylactic reaction for a woman in Alaska: she had no history of allergies

Another case of allergic reaction to the Pfizer vaccine, this time in the US A middle-aged healthcare worker had a severe allergic reaction in Alaska yesterday after receiving the serum and was under observation in the hospital today. The woman has no history of allergies but suffered an anaphylactic reaction that started 10 minutes after vaccination at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, writes the New York Times. Lindy Jones, medical director of the emergency department, reported that the reaction decreased rapidly after the patient was treated with epinephrine (adrenaline).

“It’s okay now,” he added. But government officials were quick to find out more on the eve of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meeting of experts who tomorrow will have to decide whether to green light Moderna’s vaccine. The woman’s reaction, writes the NYT, is believed to be similar to the anaphylactic reaction experienced by two healthcare workers in Britain after administration of the Pfizer vaccine.
