The Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine will be available in the UK from next week. The United Kingdom thus becomes the first Western country to approve a vaccine against SARS-Cov-2, paving the way for mass immunization starting with the most exposed. Albert Bourla, President and CEO of Pfizer, spoke of “a historic moment in the fight against Covid-19.” The vaccine was authorized for emergency use by the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (Mhra), the British authority, in a decision that anticipated those of the FDA in the United States and the EMA in Europe.

Priority to the elderly and medical personnel

“The government has accepted the recommendation of the Kingdom’s pharmaceutical regulatory authority, the MHRA, to approve the use of Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine,” a statement from the Health Ministry read. “The vaccine will be available across the UK from next week with priority given to older people in nursing homes and medical staff,” the statement added. The Mhra says the vaccine delivers up to 95% protection against the virus and is safe for mass vaccinations. The UK has already asked 40 million dose, enough to vaccinate 20 million of people, with two injections each, reports the BBC. Approximately should be available soon 10 million of doses, the first arriving in the country in the next few days.
