The additional unilateral purchase of vaccines from Germany violates European agreements. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said this during the press conference at the end of the year, citing Article 7 of the contract.
“Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands were the first countries to move synchronously and synchronously to create the alliance for vaccines. Later, after obtaining contracts with pharmaceutical companies, they handed the ball over to the European Commission, because it was considered, with a political option, that on the vaccine front it was necessary to move in unison as a compact front. That said, Italy has not tried to get other orders because the negotiated doses are hundreds of millions, absolutely sufficient. Furthermore, the EU, also at our request, has taken care to buy more to allow us to help countries that will have access difficulties (in the Balkans, North Africa). Furthermore, Italy has not done so because in Article 7 bilateral contracting is prohibited if access is made at European level ”.
Conte defends the vaccination plan, speaking of an “unprecedented” effort, which sees Italy “up to the challenge and not Cinderella.” The premier is confident that “by the end of spring we will be able to have a significant first impact,” with the vaccine for 10-15 million citizens.
“I would get the vaccine immediately,” says Conte, “but I will respect the priorities.” Regarding the vaccination obligation, the premier says that it is a hypothesis that “we do not evaluate, we exclude it. We are confident that we will also be able to reach the targets optionally.
Finally, the premier expressed “the maximum solidarity with Claudia Alivernini”, the first vaccinated nurse, insulted on the web. “It is unacceptable in itself, especially now that we are implementing a vaccination plan that will ensure the country.”
