Giulio Deangeli: “I took 3 degrees in 90 days to treat ALS and Alzheimer’s”

During the calculation of the initial score, which determines the final graduation grade together with the thesis, the biomedical engineering professors at the University of Pisa felt that they had made some mistakes. That 128 really seemed like a mistake, even higher than the highest possible notes: 110 and praise. And instead, the smiling 25-year-old in front of them, not only had thirty-something honors, but what he was discussing was the third thesis in three months, after those of medicine and biotechnology. And since the paths to excellence are endless, while Giulio Deangeli da Este (Padua) received the third virtual academic hug (for Covid reasons) from the graduate commission, he was already thinking about taking the last exam in biomaterials sciences for him fourth grade, the master’s degree in molecular biotechnology: 150 exams in four years for a 12-year study cycle and with the highest marks in all subjects.

I’m a normal guy

An alien? I’m just a normal boy in love with studying and with a dream: to defeat degenerative diseases like ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s forever, he responds. To make his dream come true, the super student decided to study a little more. After fourth grade, which I hope to discuss in November, I will do a masters at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and then I want to go to Cambridge for a 3-4 year doctorate in neuroscience.

He plays the violin and speaks three languages.

The only child of a veterinarian mother, teacher and father, Giulio speaks English, French and German, plays the violin, loves the music of Mahler, Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich and loves to invent artificial intelligence algorithms. I have created a programming language with which I have developed software that interrogates me and helps me to study by continuously varying the method, he explains with satisfaction. With the study, the phobia of spiders also won. I was terrified, but once I read a lot of books, these beautiful arachnids became my friends, he confirms.

Five prestigious scholarships

Giulio Deangeli is also the only Italian who has simultaneously won five highly prestigious scholarships, three of which are at the University of Cambridge, where more than 20,000 applicants arrive each year from all over the world and there are very few places available. Cambridge professors also decided that this promising Italian deserved to be awarded, along with 23 other European students, with the Vice-Rectorate, one of the university’s most prestigious awards.

I am a single looking

And the heart I’m single – he responds – but I’m still looking. I would like to find a girl with whom I can also discuss the topics I have studied. Probably another record-breaking feat. But not for Giulio, who seems to already have the correct method in mind. it’s just a question of application, he explains quietly. In Oxford, without concurrent degrees, I will have more time and find my sweet and intelligent half. A matter of research, application, and the right sentiment, of course.
