Germany has decided that it will extend the nationwide lockdown on December 16 to contain the spread of the coronavirus until March 7. The news came at the end of the meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the governors of the 16 federal Länder. Most of the current restrictions will be extended: nonessential bars, restaurants, and shops will remain closed, but barbers and hairdressers will be able to reopen from March 1. Merkel also said that the decision to resume kindergarten and school activities will rest with the Länder.
The number of infections has decreased “constantly” because the “measures imposed” have been effective, said the foreign minister, who explained that there is still concern about new variants of the virus. Merkel wants to bring the incidence to 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for seven days, before returning to normal. The chancellor and the governors of the Länder will meet again on March 3 to assess the situation.
