Gaudio: “There was a leak. I refused only for personal reasons”

“I explained to the president that I could not accept for personal reasons. I’m not saying anything else, it’s no one’s fault. These are issues that concern the privacy of a family: I would have moved to Catanzaro to work 14 hours a day as I am used to, I would have taken the commitment seriously ”. Eugenio Gaudio, outgoing rector of La Sapienza, clarifies to Corriere della Sera the reasons that led him to reject the post of health commissioner in his region, Calabria, offered by the government.

Gaudio reiterates, therefore, that the election was not due to reasons related to justice, as some imagined.

“I did not say ‘no’ on the issue of Catania (where I was under investigation for a university contest, ed) because in the afternoon my lawyer informed me that the prosecutor filed the request for presentation against me. From the impressions, in addition, my strangeness to history arose ”.

When Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Minister of Health Roberto Speranza “sent me their esteem for how I directed Sapienza, they told me that among other things it was important to be Calabrian for a position like that of Commissioner ad acta per la Sanità”, Gaudio dedicated a time to think, until he made the decision in agreement with his wife.

“I asked for time to think about it. I was in college all day and we talked about it at night when I got home. And we decided not to. If you were afraid of the assignment? I would have applied myself analytically, there would have been consultants with me ”.

However, at the time the proposal was made, there appears to have been a misunderstanding between him and the government. “I asked for time to evaluate,” he explains, while the Government had communicated the resolution. Then, a final comment on Gino Strada who yesterday announced the collaboration between Emergencies and Civil Protection precisely to deal with the Calabrian emergency: “I don’t know him, I’ve never met him.”
