Gallinara island goes public: the Mibact plan

In June, the purchase of Ukrainian tycoon Olexandr Boguslayev sparked much discussion. The businessman had acquired by a limited liability company the property of the island of Gallinara, located just over a kilometer from the coast of Albenga, in the province of Savona. The islet, whose shape resembles that of a turtle, is a natural reserve, almost completely covered with vegetation and the “home” of various marine species.

In June, a Monte Carlo-based company – and, as mentioned, close to Ukrainian tycoon Boguslayev – had expressed a desire to take over the property for a sum of around 10 million euros. However, after protests by various associations in the area, the The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism has asserted its right of first refusal in some structures of the islet, with the intention of leaving it open to the public.

The island of Gallinara “redeemed” by the Ministry: what changes

After news of the Ukrainian tycoon’s purchase spread, the main concern was that the new owner wanted to build a new construction. A possibility excluded a priori by the municipal administration of Albenga, with Mayor Riccardo Tomatis who already recalled in June that the entire island is a protected space.

With the purchase of the main villa by Mibact and other buildings on the small island off the coast of Liguria, the hypothesis of a construction speculation is definitely abandoned. The Ukrainian owner and the Ministry will likely have to live together and therefore come to an agreement for the development of the area.

Gallinara Island transformed into a museum? The Mibact hypothesis

According to the secret rooms of the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities, the intention is to transform the manor house into a museum, freely accessible to the public. In particular, the structures present in the Gallinara must be transformed into an exhibition space to enhance the exceptional archaeological, historical-artistic and landscape values.

Also, in the future, the Mibact could involve the Albenga naval archaeological museum in the management of the main town on the island of Gallinara and the other structures present there. In this way, in fact, it would be possible to enhance the underwater archaeological area present in the stretch of sea off the coast of Liguria, transforming Gallinara into a research center and logistical base for future archaeological research.
