Galimberti, the recipe: “teachers selected with personality tests, parents expelled from school and 12 students per class”

“The philosophy must be extended to all schools and included in the first grade.” The school, in addition, “should take advantage of Covid to make structural investments that change it forever, such as reducing the number of students per classroom: no more than twelve, if it really wants to train our young people. More and more nihilists, deprived of the future and induced to live at night or take drugs and drink because during the day no one recognizes them ”. And the teachers?

They should be selected with personality tests to avoid teachers being unable to teach and passionate about ruining the lives of entire generations of students in 40 years of career.Umberto Galimberti at the Philosophy Festival held in Modena, Carpi and Sassuolo. In front of the crowded public in the distant version in the huge Piazza dei Martiri in Carpi, the philosopher addressed the subject of technique within the concept of “machines “, which was the leitmotif of the 2021 Edition of the Modena Festival, now in its seventeenth edition. An edition that is part of a period that has seen the death of many philosophers, from Bodei to Gregory, from Giorello to Vegetti and that leads Galimberti to wonder if philosophy is also dead.

She’s dead – he explains – But it will rise on one condition, that you remain a thinking communitySince knowledge is not enough, Galimberti continues, “lknowledge gives us science, but philosophy has the function of questioning the knowledge and ideas that we have, we must not lose the habit of thinking“And question what serves us. And in this you have to practice from an early age, that’s why – explains the philosopher, who in the past was also a teacher in secondary schools – “.it is necessary to extend philosophy to all schools and insert it from the first grade, since thinking is not optional”.

And instead? “Instead, the goal is to remove philosophy from the schools and, sadly, the study of Greek will also be abolished.“After all, what is the use of Aristotle’s philosophy?”And Aristotle replied: it is useless because philosophy is not a servant“Instead, philosophy comes to the rescue of thinking humanity, especially in a period that rewards the primacy of technology.”But the technique does not open scenarios of salvation, it does not tell the truthGalimberti warns in front of a speechless audience.

U.S“, happens, “we no longer have the opportunity to choose when faced with the dictates of technology. I cannot choose whether or not to have a computer or a mobile phone. As you download their new products on the market, you have to buy them, penalized by social exclusion. We cannot exempt ourselves. If the world takes place on the web, I cannot disassociate myself from the web.“. Galimberti underlines the secondary role of politics.”Technique decides how things are done – observe – but it is politics that should decide if certain things are done. But politics looks to the economy and the economy is not the ultimate decision-making authority because the economy looks to technology, which in turn attracts the economy in its investments. So it is technology that decides, not politics and not even democracy. That it is not only the exercise of voting, but above all the reduction of waiting lists in hospitals, nurseries for free women”.

The technique for its part allows those who handle it to feel oblivious to any profile of responsibility for the damage it does, a bit like the Nazis who limited themselves to saying that they felt good with their conscience because they were limited to following orders. A bit like the school teachers, Galimberti protests: “as long as they make their plans and are okay, even if they have never looked their students in the face. The clinical look is over, as for doctors who must obey protocols if they want to save themselves from any profile of responsibility, if you are an official you must do what they tell you”.

But let’s get back to the young people. “Try asking the young people what the future is. For us it was a certainty, for example, the certainty of finding a job immediately after graduation. For them, the future is a threat. When I graduated I knew I would be teaching in two years, today is certainly not the case for them. If they drink and drink, they drink and live at night, is it because during the day who calls them by name? Who takes them into consideration?“But still,”They have the maximum of their strength from the age of 15. They have the maximum sexual potency but cannot procreate before the age of 35. They have the greatest mental power at that age. Why don’t we use the great potential that they have in their head? The creative moment is at that age ”. Here is the main source of the widespread nihilism, “purpose is missing: why do I have to compromise? Why do I have to live?”.

And here is the role of the school. “School shouldn’t be just about education. The mind does not open if the heart does not open. How many of us studied some disciplines a lot because they had fascinating teachers and how many of us studied little or not at all because they hated other teachers? For the school to work, it must first educate what it means to return to the emotional and sentimental order. Otherwise, we remain on the instinctual level. Feelings are learned, they are cultural gifts. Our grandmothers told us the stories and in those stories they saw good and evil. We have to reintroduce literature in schools, face suicide, joy. If you internalize concepts like joy, suicide, despair, passion, you are polite and avoid doing the tragic things that we periodically witness: what kind of society are we building?

But the school, and this Galimberti has been repeating itself for years like a mantra now. “You must not have classes with more than 30 students, otherwise it means that you have decided that you do not intend to educate. Classes should have no more than twelve, thirteen people and the school should take advantage of Covid to make structural investments that change it forever. The fact that we have few ministers is because nobody cares about school ”. Not just small classes. Galimberti challenges the teacher hiring system. Those who, according to him, have not carried out, in their wake, studies of developmental age psychology: “Do they have to do with people of that age and do not know anything about psychology?”.

In addition, according to the philosopher, they cannot teach people who are not passionate about students and who in 40 years of career ruin entire generations: “I have no problem appreciating a charismatic teacher who plagiarizes classes – need – but those who ruin students should be punished. There are people who induce suicide, because they add negative elements to other negative elements already present in the head and in the existence of the children. Teachers must be selected with tests that assess personality, it is necessary to verify if the teacher has passion and if he is capable of moving.”.

Parents, for their part, “they must be expelled from school because their presence prevents the child from assuming his responsibilities. Parents are interested in promotion and the teacher to avoid summer problems in front of the Tar ends up promoting everyone. But in this way a meritocratic structure is not built. In Italy we are still citizens, we are still relatives. And until it comes to merit, we will not have civil society. This is my school reform but it will never happen
