Regoledo di Cosio gave his last goodbye today, Friday, September 18, 2020, to Don Roberto Malgesini, the parish priest who was stabbed to death last Tuesday in Como. The family’s choice, for the funeral, was to return home, to the country where Don Roberto was born.

Don Roberto’s funeral

The funeral was presided over by the Bishop of Como Oscar Cantoni and concelebrated, due to understandable space requirements, by a very small number of priests, appointed to represent the diocesan presbytery. The square in front of the church of Sant’Ambrogio quickly filled up in the few places available, but the funeral was broadcast on the You Tube channel of the Diocese of Como Weekly to allow everyone to participate, even from a distance.

Extraordinary love message

The value of the priest was well described by Bishop Oscar Cantoni in his homily. “We can affirm, without a doubt, that Don Roberto had taken the Lord’s words seriously recorded in the gospel that was proclaimed: “Whenever you did these things to one of these least of my brothers, you did it to me.” And Pope Francis stressed, commenting on this passage of the Gospel, that ‘We are called to discover Christ in the poor, to lend them our voice in their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to understand them and to welcome their mysterious wisdom that God wants to communicate to us through them. ‘ These statements by Francisco are the key to understanding and enjoying Don Roberto’s style of pastoral action. – Said the Bishop referring to the priest murdered in Thrac Thracically – These days, our Christian community, but also our entire society, although Amazed and dismayed by the tragedy suffered, she rediscovers this extraordinary message of love., that Don Roberto incarnated with a disarming simplicity and that he refers us to spread and multiply. To all of us, therefore, the task of continuing with Don Roberto’s kindness and tenderness towards those in need, the poor in particular, recognized and welcomed as the true “flesh of Christ.” The Lord prepares us for a new source of grace through the martyrdom of Don Roberto: let us not waste this extraordinary and undeserved opportunity and… each one does his part! ”. Bishop Oscar concluded.
