A French army officer was denounced and placed under investigation for treason in favor of Russia. He is suspected of having provided top-secret documents to Moscow’s secret services, as announced by radio Europe 1 and later confirmed by Defense Minister Florence Parly. “I can confirm – said the minister – that a senior official is in legal proceedings for an attack on security.”
Man of Russian origin
According to Europe 1, the procedure started about ten days ago. The case is particularly heated and shameful for Paris, since the officer, a lieutenant colonel, was stationed in NATO, in a military base in Italy, more precisely in the allied command center of Lago Patria (Giugliano), at the gates from Naples. The Naples Joint Allied Forces Command is one of the two operational strategic commands of the Allied Powers Headquarters in Europe: the other is located in Brunssum, the Netherlands. Before moving to Giugliano in 2012, the base was in Bagnoli throughout the post-war period.
According to reports from the French station, the man, in his fifties and father of 5 children, has distant Russian origins and is fluent in the Russian language.
Contacts with the Russian spy
In Italy, the officer was seen coming into contact with a Russian spy, an agent of the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service. As soon as these suspicions arose, France did not want to take risks. “The Ministry of Defense has taken the initiative to refer the matter to the Public Ministry by activating article 40 (of the criminal procedure code that establishes that any official who has knowledge of a crime must inform the judicial authority without delay, ed.)”, Minister Florence Parly said.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation and the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI) arrested the suspect about ten days ago, when he was finishing his vacation in France and was about to leave for Italy.
