The dutch government suspended passenger flights from the UK for fears related to new variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, the coronavirus responsible for Covid-19. The mutated variant of the virus, according to the British authorities, has a much higher transmissibility, quantified yesterday by 70% more by Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a press conference (here everything we know, so far, about this variant).

The Dutch government’s measure, in effect from today until at least January 1, took effect after that. authorities confirmed that they have isolated at least one case of the same variant of the virus in the Netherlands, which forced part of Great Britain to return to a blockade regime.

The Ministry of Health warned that any introduction of this variant from the UK should be avoided as much as possible, limiting and controlling the movement of passengers arriving from the UK. The cabinet of ministers is closely monitoring Covid-19 developments abroad and is studying the possibilities of additional measures for other months of transport.

WHO alert: in close contact with London authorities

Meanwhile, following yesterday’s decision by the British government, the World Health Organization (WHO) has made it known that it is in close contact with the UK authorities. In a tweet, the UN agency writes that it is sharing scientific information with London and is committed to providing all updates to other member states and the public, as we learn about the characteristics of this variant (of the virus) and the its implications.

What is known about the new variant

Information on the new variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus was provided on Saturday in London by British government medical director Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance. The variant contains 23 code differences from the standard sequence. Beyond the transmission speed – which, as said, is 70% higher than the current dominant one – there is, for the moment, no evidence of its greater lethality. There is still no evidence that it can be resistant to the vaccines that are beginning to be distributed these days. I think this situation makes things worse – Whitty said at a press conference yesterday, according to the BBC – but there are things that induce optimism, such as the next vaccine, provided that the vaccine works against this variant: that, for the moment, just a guess.
