It happened in Siculiana, three policemen were injured. At dawn the driver was stopped

AGRIGENTO – A migrant fleeing from the reception center of Villa Sikania in Siculiana (Ag) was hit by a car and died. He was a 20-year-old Eritrean who arrived at the facility on August 1. Three policemen who were trying to block it were also injured because they were hit by the same car: they were taken to the San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Agrigento. Two have suffered various injuries and bruises, while the third has a serious fracture and will have to undergo delicate surgery. 34-year-old motorist arrested.

The attempted escape along state highway 115, at the entrance to Siculiana, occurred in the middle of the night. A group of migrants -after having protested throughout the afternoon, with about twenty of them who had also climbed on the roof of the reception structure- managed to escape, reaching the road. To chase them, to try to block them and bring them back, the policemen who were in the surveillance service in Villa Sikania. However, the Volkswagen Touareg fell on the fleeing migrants and police officers and overwhelmed them. For the Eritrean there was nothing to do, the three officers were wounded. The police (also the Agrigento police commissioner) and the carabinieri worked on the ground throughout the night and carried out the reliefs to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident. At dawn the driver was stopped and apparently did not stop immediately after the impact.

The Mayor: “Inadequate Structure”

“What happened last night is proven proof that the structure is inadequate, both because of the location within the inhabited center and for the accommodation capacity. We are all saddened by the accident and the death of the young Eritrean, as well as by the wounded policemen. The population, now more than ever, is alarmed ”. This was stated by the mayor of Siculiana, Leonardo Lauricella, about the death in a traffic accident of the migrant who escaped from the center and the wounds of three policemen who were pursuing him. “The structure is inadequate,” he added, “and we have been saying this for a long time, both because it is in the town, because it faces State Highway 115 and this facilitates the prospects of escape for migrants. It is also unsuitable for the number of migrants it hosts, far exceeding the authorized accommodation capacity. And in a moment of health emergency – explained the mayor of Siculiana – this breach of receptive capacity determines a danger to the health of my community and also to themselves. The population is alarmed. Recently, through a city council resolution, we appointed the lawyer Rubino to verify the legitimacy of the authorizations issued and request compensation for damages. Because this community – concluded Lauricella – has suffered and is suffering damage to its image and economy and a severe blow to tourism ”.

“We have long denounced the insufficiency of the Siculiana reception center and, therefore, we ask for its closure: yesterday the death of a child was announced, who was probably not a dangerous subject in an accident in which three policemen were seriously injured and risked losing their lives ”. The Sicilian Silp CGIL writes it in a note. “The center of Sikania – says Vito Alagna, secretary of the union – is a hotel structure whose access leads directly to State Road 115, a straight section totally dark at night and not suitable to be used for its current use, or more Well to Centro Hub that today, at the height of the Covid era, although it maintains its collection functions for transit to relocations, it is also a center for isolation and health observation ”. Alagna emphasizes that “in the center, as in all the other analogues scattered around Sicily, the women and men of the police are forced to operate in extremely precarious conditions without certain rules of engagement and without any protection from the point of view of place. In this case – he adds – all the union representatives of the category in the province of Agrigento have repeatedly expressed and denounced the lack of an area where they can operate safely in such events, that is, a place where they can handle issues critical within these places without affecting and / or endangering public order and security, or rather people, local communities that embrace these realities. ”Therefore, the SILP calls for“ an assumption of responsibility ”. Alagna and Silp express “full support and solidarity with the police officers of these heroes of the Police Headquarters and the Mobile Departments of all Italy, who run voluntarily in aid of the women and men of the Agrigento Police Headquarters, physically and morally exhausted from a situation that they cannot sustain alone ”.

“Critical issues in managing the reception of migrants are becoming increasingly onerous and have even come to endanger the security of the agents responsible for the surveillance of those who land in Italy. Last night’s episode in Siculiana, near Agrigento, with two comrades injured in the pursuit of a migrant who has fled a hotspot, is the clearest demonstration of this. ” Therefore, the General Secretary of the Coisp Police Union, Domenico Pianese. “One of the two agents – continues Pianese – normally in the mobile department of Rome, even had to be operated on for multiple fractures in his leg. You can’t wait for something even more serious to happen to step in to protect the police officers assigned to such sensitive tasks. Therefore, we hope that a debate will open as soon as possible on the rules of engagement for those who guarantee security in the reception centers. “
