(ANSA) – MANILA, DECEMBER 25 – A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 7:43 a.m. local time (00:43 in Italy) in the sea off the coast of the Philippine island of Luzon.

According to data from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the US Geological Survey of the United States, the earthquake had a hypocenter at a depth of about 150 km and an epicenter 2 km from the town of Calatagan.

At the moment there is no damage to people or things. However, witnesses reported that buildings also shook in the capital Manila and that many Christmas masses were interrupted.

“The religious service was stopped, but people did not panic,” said Carlo Cáceres, Calatagan police chief. “There are often earthquakes in the area and people are more or less used to it,” he added.

The Philippines is located in the so-called Pacific “belt of fire”, where colliding tectonic plates cause frequent earthquakes and significant volcanic activity.
