A strong earthquake, of magnitude 6.2, struck Croatia again causing damage and landslides, at least one dead and injured. Downtown Petrinja is the area most affected by the destruction. According to local media, among the collapsed buildings would be the local hospital and a kindergarten, where one of the children housed would have died. The frightened population took to the streets and open spaces. The Croatian army mobilized to provide assistance to the population of central Croatia. At least 300 soldiers left for Petrinja, where the most damage was recorded. The Krsko nuclear power plant in Slovenia was closed as a precautionary measure.

The earthquake, with an epicenter 47 km from Zagreb, was registered at 12.19. The strong telluric movement lasted a few seconds and was felt in several municipalities of Friuli Venezia Giulia, both in the mountains and on the coast. Many people left their homes. All the employees of the Udine municipality at the time of the earthquake left the Palazzo d’Aronco. Today’s earthquake follows the two tremors recorded yesterday in the same area, and occurred 186 kilometers from the border, east of San Dorligo della Valle.

After the first earthquake, others, less intense, also followed, attesting to the intense activity in the Croatian subsoil.

Above, the telephone interview with Stefano Parolai, director of the Ogs Seismological Research Center.

Previous. The area is the same where two tremors were recorded yesterday, one of 5.2 degrees to 6.28 (with an epicenter 47 kilometers southeast of Zagreb) and another at 7.49 of magnitude 4.8 (ML Richter) with an epicenter not far from the first. 51 kilometers southeast of Zagreb. The seismic activity is therefore probably related.

In March, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the city of Zagreb, killing one and injuring 27. A lot of help had also come from our region.

Roberti: proximity to the Croatian people and the Italian community

I express on behalf of the entire regional administration and my personal closeness to the Croatian people called to face a new emergency after the strong earthquake that this morning shook Zagreb, the neighboring territories and which arrived with its burden of terror even in our region. A special thought goes to the Italian community in Croatia to which our solidarity and support goes and to all the families who today in Croatia mourn deaths, injuries and serious damage ”. These are the words of the councilor for local and co-regional autonomies abroad of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Pierpaolo Roberti, a few hours after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Zagreb area, in Croatia, ten kilometers from depth.

Rojc-Serracchiani: “Help in damaged areas as soon as possible

“Our thinking goes with the populations affected by the earthquake that hit Croatia again with violence, adding disaster to pain in a time already marked by the pandemic.” This was declared by Debora Serracchiani and Senator Tatjana Rojc, an expression of the Slovenian community in Italy.

The Sen. Rojc, personally contacting the Croatian diplomatic representation in Italy, expressed “his condolences for the victims and the injured in the damaged cities. I hope that the aid will reach the severely damaged areas as soon as possible.”
