Vacation restrictions across the country continue to divide ministers and majority forces. The exceptions to the prohibition to travel on red dates (beyond those always foreseen: work, necessity, health, return home) are still discussed, in particular to allow grandparents or in any case family members who do not live together – no more than two – to join the family members at the Christmas Eve dinner table so as not to leave anyone alone. There will be no legal restriction, but as in the past, a recommendation. Yes to movements in the same days between neighboring municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants is also evaluated.

The framework must be defined in the afternoon in the Council of Ministers (after the meeting between Conte and the majority heads of delegation, followed by the afternoon meeting between the government and the regions), if not everything is postponed to Saturday. The squeeze could come with a new decree of law if the traditional Dpcm vehicle were not enough (the dossier is on the technicians’ table). The CDM will also immediately discuss refreshments for the economic categories affected by the new closures. The point is considered decisive by the governors, almost all agree on the need for a new grip for the holidays, but behind the promise of financial aid. Minister Boccia reassured them: “We will launch the soft drinks soon.” Meanwhile, the Veneto besieged by infections has anticipated government decisions by immediately launching a squeeze: from Saturday, December 19 to January 6, it is forbidden to leave the municipality of residence after 2 p.m.

The fears of this weekend’s exodus

In fact, the weekend of the dreaded exodus is looming – with trains already “sold out” -, particularly to the south, before the “deadline” of December 21 for travel between regions (which will remain in effect until 6 January, regardless of additional tightening that the Government will launch in the next few hours), which is also the last weekend of free shopping before the squeeze. In short, lines and gatherings seen as a danger due to the possible rebound in infections, which is why the Ministry of the Interior has ordered more controls at stations and airports and at nightlife venues. Also because on Sunday they should turn yellow in extremis and therefore with freedom of movement also Campania, Tuscany and Valle d’Aosta – Abruzzo maybe it will stay orange – always if the control room today gives the green light to the new ordinances of the Minister of Health Roberto Esperanza. Veneto, on the other hand, could turn orange.

Controls reinforced by the Ministry of the Interior
