Killed in the street, with a knife. Don Roberto Malgesini died like this, in Como, despairing and despairing of an entire community.
Everyone knew him, that priest with wavy hair and an aquiline nose: he was the “priest of the last”, always with the weakest and poorest. Social volunteering, hospitality and the fight against poverty were his creed. He lived for others, making himself available to the less fortunate.

Just as he was bringing the homeless people breakfast in Piazza San Rocco, one of them, a 53-year-old Tunisian with mental problems and disorders (but not confirmed by the police) stabbed him several times. It hit him with a murder spree never seen before. Several dagger cuts both on the back and chest and a cut on the neck that proved fatal to the religious. As if the murderer wanted to cut his throat.

So much violence for no apparent and explainable reason. The murderer appeared a few minutes later at the carabinieri station that is 400 meters from the scene of the crime. Don Roberto had helped the man several times. in fact, every morning I was waiting for him to have breakfast along with the other desperate people who have filled the area for some years. Scenes of poverty, marginalization and despair that would have been unthinkable before the economic crisis. The “priest of the” last “called simply” Don “by the faithful, had also been fined for distributing food to the poor, having violated an ordinance of the mayor.

“He was aware of the risks associated with his humanitarian mission – commented the director of Caritas in the Diocese of Como. Even the homeless remember him through tears:” For me he was like a father – says Gabriel Nastase, 36 – when I came from Romania, alone, without home or work, he was the first to help me “. Even the president of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, expressed closeness “to the Como community, which mourns the death of Don Roberto Malgesini, attacked by a homeless man to whom the priest had brought consolation.”
League leader Matteo Salvini commented harshly: “The homeless, instead of thanking God and the Italians for the opportunities they offer them, thank them with a knife.”
