Monsignor Cantoni:

“We live in faith a deep sense of closeness to whom we can define as a martyr of charity. He was a truly evangelical priest who gave himself to all with simplicity of heart and with truly enviable gratuity ”. This was stated by the bishop of Como, mgr. Oscar Cantoni, in an interview with Tg2000 on the subject to the slaughter by Don Roberto Malgesini.

“Our Church”, continued the Bishop of Como, is “in great suffering at this time as in recent times due to other deaths that have hurt us.” Don Malgesini, the bishop concluded, “leaves teaching to reach out to everyone, beginning with the poor whom he recognized as the flesh of Christ and to serve them, love them in any situation, of any origin and of any religion.”

Tonight, September 15, at 8:30 p.m., in the Cathedral of Como, the Bishop will preside over the Holy Rosary, during which we will pray for Don Roberto, for his family and also for the one who beat him to death. El Rosario, since the entrances to the Cathedral are limited due to the containment of the coronavirus, will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of “Il Settimanale della Diocese di Como”.

Don Roberto, a native of Regoledo di Cosio, had turned 51 last August. Ordained a priest in June 1998, he was vicar first in Gravedona (until 2003), then in Lipomo (from 2003 to 2008). Since 2008 he has been a collaborator in San Rocco, which later became, with San Bartolomeo, the pastoral community “Blessed Scalabrini”.

Here is Bishop Cantoni’s statement.

«We are humanly shocked by the death by murder of Don Roberto, but we live this dramatic mourning intensely in faith, the day we celebrate the memory of María Addolorata, an important day also because it is the anniversary of the death of Don Pino Puglisi. Saints are used … I am convinced that Don Roberto was a “Saint next door”, for his simplicity, for the kindness with which he went to meet everyone, for the esteem he received from so many people, even from not believers. or not Christian, for the fraternal and supportive help that he wanted to give to everyone in this city, which so much needs to learn to be in solidarity, because this is the new name of peace.

Don Roberto carried out his ministry in a truly pastoral dimension, He gave himself to everyone because, he often repeated to me, “The poor are the true flesh of Christ”. His service was aimed at people so that he could experience the tenderness of God bowing down and bending over people in need. I invite you all to pray, those who can, tonight will gather in the Cathedral, we will pray for Don Roberto, for his family but also for the one who killed him.
