The accident between Pontedera and Montopoli. The victim was a 54-year-old Casciana Terme resident, Pietro Martino, who was driving his Nissan. Investigated the trucker: he may have braked hard, to check for a fault in the headlights
PONTEDERA. I was on my way to work, in a transport company in Santa Croce sull’Arno. Entering Pontedera, on the highway in the section that connects with Montopoli Valdarno, Pietro martino, 54, from Casciana Terme, died. His Nissan Qashqai collided with a truck that was either parked on the road or had just abruptly slowed near one of the speed detection stations. A terrible crash, with the car slipping under the truck. For the driver there was nothing to do. He died instantly, crushed between the leaves of the truck, which was carrying a load of paper, and those of the car.
It was the young Moldovan who was driving the truck (the accident took place shortly before 6 o’clock) the first to realize the seriousness of the situation. Later, numerous phone calls came to the rescuers, although from the beginning it was clear that the living man would hardly have been extracted from that cabin so deformed by the impact.
In a short time, the Mercy vehicles from Pontedera and two teams from the Cascina and Pontedera firefighters arrived. All that was left was to secure the vehicles, which were later seized by the Pisa traffic police. The Pisa Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the fatal accident. The prosecutor, Dra. Pamela Romano, ordered the transfer of the body to the institute of forensic medicine pending the autopsy.
Although it is a duty, the 23-year-old truck driver was investigated for the tragedy of the road. At this time, the Pisa traffic police (Commander Ameglio Menguzzo also intervened at the scene), who took charge of the surveys and listened to some witnesses, are considering more hypotheses. The truck driver said he had an abnormality in the truck’s headlights. Maybe that’s why it also abruptly slowed down and the driver didn’t have time to brake. From what could be seen after the first inspections, the truck was stationary or in slow motion. But there was no reason to slow down. In the coming days, the vehicle will be carefully checked by an expert to establish with certainty the causes of the sudden slowdown, which occurred as mentioned on the road to Florence. The autopsy, on the other hand, will be able to clarify if the driver has had any disease. In a few months, on the same stretch of road, there were three tragedies involving heavy vehicles. Each has had different dynamics and causes and histories in itself, notes the traffic police. Heavy, as usual, the consequences from the point of view of traffic. Initially, for vehicles heading towards the Tuscan capital, the mandatory exit was established in Pontedera to allow emergency vehicles to clear the road. Circulation remained steep for most of the morning. –
