Luigi di maio It ends, again, at the center of the controversy. During the meeting in Rome with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yithe Chancellor boasted a tan that some define exaggerated, thanks to the days spent in Sardinia. The photographs immediately became the subject of ironic memes, relaunched on the Internet: there are those who compare him with the conductor Carlo Conti, who with Barack Obama. But there were also comparisons with NBA star Michael Jordan and with characters from American television series (the leader of the M5 was inserted with a photomontage in a picture of the Robinsons, ed).
Too bad that instead of distancing yourself Di Maio has decided to react with irony, publishing some of the memes found on the web on their social accounts. Adding the comment: Guys … I promise you next summer put the cream 50. And thank you for making this day lighter.
The foreign critic
Di Maio’s response drew some laughs, but also several criticisms. A disgusting attempt to be nice, wrote one user, accusing him of racism. Blackface is never acceptable, replied another. An article signed by Emma Bubola and Gaia Pianigiani also criticized the minister’s behavior. In America, anyone who makes irony about blackface resigns or gets fired, according to the New York Times article. Even abroad, in short, some have argued that the relaunch of the images reflects Di Maio’s provincial worldview, which does not take into account the global conversations about racism taking place outside of Italy. Others said the images ignore the discrimination suffered by blacks in Italy, where African immigrants often face violence and intolerance. The text does not even refer to the previous error on the subject, made in 2008 by Silvio Berlusconi. Barack Obama? Young, handsome and tanned, he said about the new president of the United States. Except, then, to add – making the situation worse -: I wanted to be a great compliment, an absolute tenderness towards him … If you don’t have a sense of humor …
Spokesperson response
A first response came from August Rossciompeli, the minister’s spokesman, who – always reports the NyT – defended the minister’s cameo alongside Tot, a native of Di Maio from Naples: no one in Italy has associated the performance taken from the 1961 film Tottruffa’62 to racism. In other words, he clarified, it was not about blackface and there was no desire to assume – ironically – the appearance of a black person: a controversy born out of nowhere. Di Maio did not paint his face black, he was very tanned.
