Acts of vandalism, sadly, were not new to the Poor Clares. But the screams and especially the curses in the church, not those. “We can’t take it anymore,” says Sister Caterina Quartu, from the monastery that houses seven nuns. And so, yesterday morning she had, for the umpteenth time, to go to the police, the municipal police and the police station to report what happened.
The violated function
The atrocious episode happened in recent days, the community of the nuns of Santa Chiara was busy in the afternoon in the novenas in preparation for the feast of the Madonna del Rimedio (celebrated yesterday). The church door was naturally open and some of the boys came in: “First they tried to remove the disinfectant from the entrance,” says Sister Caterina. “Then they started yelling and cursing. At that moment, the cold fell between the nuns and the people who attended the service. Someone made them leave the church, but the very serious fact remains. And as if that weren’t enough, some stones at the back of the church have been stained with blue paint; Garbage of all kinds abandoned, after the spree, in the cemetery that the nuns are forced to clean almost daily: bottles, cigarette butts, condoms and sanitary pads. Eventually, the plaque placed in the church broke into many pieces. “A situation that is now pushing all limits,” says Sister Caterina. The cameras fixed for a few years seem not to worry these vandals who have no respect for anything. Now those images are in the hands of the police and they are expected to provide some elements to trace those responsible.
The archbishop
“It is a very serious event,” says Archbishop Father Roberto Carboni. “We have to help these kids to make them understand that actions have consequences that, in this case, hurt others. They should not be punished but helped in this sense. Father Roberto remembers the situation that occurred in the Piazza Cattedrale “but in that case there certainly was no episode of shouting and cursing in the church and we were able to talk with them and have a dialogue.”
The usual
The path of dialogue is the same one pointed out by the councilor for culture Massimiliano Sanna: “I believe that a meeting involving the police and social services is necessary to understand how to intervene.” Then a question: “But where are the parents of these children? Is it true that many times you are busy at work but you don’t wonder what your children are doing when they leave home and maybe come back late at night? ».
