Through “the continuous physiological production of tears”, through the lacrimal channels, the virus “enters through the nose and from there passes to the throat and upper and lower respiratory tracts.”
Therefore, “masks, even correctly applied, where the eyes are exposed to air containing infected microdroplets, do not prevent any contagion”. Hence, according to the president of Sis 118, the importance of introducing “the obligation to use, in addition to the mask, the anti-drip visor, at school as in any life and work environment.”
In recent months, the same alarm was raised by a study published in the ‘Annals of Internal Medicine’ and taken up by the Italian Association of Ophthalmologists, according to which the eyes are not only one of the entry doors of the virus to the body, but also a possible source of infection, since the virus can replicate in the conjunctiva, as well as in the respiratory system, and be detected by eye swabs.
