Covid vaccine, Ema: ‘Conditional authorization is the safest mechanism’

Brussels. “The EMA considers that conditional authorization is the most appropriate mechanism in this pandemic emergency.” The reaction of the European institutions to the choice of the United Kingdom, which today gave the green light to the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine, is cold, if not stung, for burning the Union authorities over time. For weeks, from Brussels and Amsterdam, the headquarters of the EMA, EU bodies have been pressuring governments so that no one opts for a national emergency procedure that divides the unity of the Union with risks to public health and safety . Obviously, it was London, which will formally leave the EU in a month, reselling the option, immediately set up in Italy by Matteo Salvini, to itself as a Brexit success. For Brussels, however, it is just propaganda.

Until December 31, Great Britain remains a member of the Union and for this reason it is the responsibility of Ema, the European pharmaceutical agency called to give the green light to the commercialization of vaccines in the EU. However, each country, in theory also Italy, can evade the examinations of European experts and proceed with a national emergency authorization. However, a choice discouraged by the EMA for two reasons.

Coronavirus, London authorizes Pfizer vaccine

The first, linked to security, is easy to understand: emergency authorization skips several steps, renounces scrupulous control of the data sent by pharmaceutical companies on experimentation, and therefore puts the health of citizens at risk. The second reason also has a media track and the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns: taking the steps does not reassure those citizens who have doubts about whether or not to inject the immunizer because, in fact, they do not reassure little about the severity of the controls due to part of the public authorities. . And the success of vaccination campaigns depends precisely on how many people agree to be injected with the drug. For these two reasons, the EMA has opted for the procedure leading to conditional approval, which reduces time compared to normal authorization protocols but does not compromise on security.

This is why behind the scenes the Europeans explain that the English choice to defeat Europe is not a success linked to Brexit, but pure political and media propaganda from London that has wanted to sell itself a hoax to show that life outside the Union is better . So much so that the British will be the first Europeans to have the vaccine. The rest, those of the continental Union, will have to wait for the EMA controls, with a possible green light for Pfizer before December 29 and for Moderna on January 12.

Matteo Salvini immediately embraced the English narrative saying: “They told us that leaving Europe would lead to Britain’s ruin, but next week they start to administer the Pfizer vaccine.” However, the reality is quite different: any EU country, even Italy, can bypass the EMA and give an emergency clearance in a few hours. But at the risk of its own citizens.
