Covid-19 infections continue to grow and record records: in the last 24 hours they have been verified almost 25 thousand new infections, compared to almost 200 thousand tampons. With the cases of positivity, the anxieties of those who fear the suspension of classroom teaching activities also increase: after high school, the risk is that a similar disposition may also be triggered for the lower grades.
What pediatricians say
Being worried about such a decision, is there‘Cultural Association of Pediatricians: On the occasion of the ACP congress, held on October 28, it was said that a possible closure of school activities even in primary school would put the physical and mental health of children and their families even more at risk.
After having presented several studies on the effects of the pandemic in childhood, the pediatricians also wanted to say that in any case up to the age of 10 the possibilities of contagion are very limited.
According to pediatricians, the closure and closure of schools and businesses, in fact, has led to an increase in domestic violence and child abuse.
More violence at home
A study conducted by the Great Ormond Hospital in London between March 23 and April 23 documented 10 cases of abusive head trauma (which also includes tremor syndrome) in children with an average age of 6-7 months, against 0 , 67 cases detected in the same period of the previous 3 years. During the Covid-19 pandemic, reports of domestic violence increased from 30% in France to 40-50% in Brazil, while in China they tripled.
“During the confinement – said Ansa Costantino Panza, pediatrician of the family and member of the ACP – pediatricians were not able to see the children and therefore document the cases of abuse and violence, as well as the school and childhood services” . .
More requests for help
With the reopening, however, “we have received an increase in requests for help from parents with behavior, anxiety and eating disorders. In fact, we have seen incredible growth in overweight children. “
The data collected so far shows that where schools have reopened, he stresses, “very few children have been infected and transmission has occurred at home by adults. Up to the age of 10, outbreaks in classrooms are very rare, it is more common for school personnel to get sick and bring the virus to school ”.
Even a study carried out in Emilia Romagna between June 6 and August 30 in children in summer centers, showed that none of the 637 swabs requested by family pediatricians for children with Covid symptoms, none were positive at that time .
Psychiatrists: why there is intolerance
According to psychiatrists, however, the discomfort of confinement does not only concern the little ones: especially adults are now less willing to give up everything that was denied them in the first wave of the Covid-19 emergency. This is because the daily number of infections causes them to experience a kind of “fence syndrome”: the more the number grows, the more government restrictions also increase through the new Dpcm.
“We feel contained in our freedom – said the president of the IAPA, Enrico Zanalda – by the figures of the pandemic, by the terror that hospitals will be saturated, and we decide not to accept new cases. Compared to the previous time, we try to keep most work activities, clinics, schools open: we try not to interrupt them, to keep activities productive, but it is probably even more difficult than in the first wave ”.
“We expected – continues Enrico Zanalda – a resurgence in the autumn, so for many it has become unacceptable to have stopped some activities due to the impossibility of adapting the structures to the second wave. People are less willing to tolerate incompetence and managerial inability. Then there is an additional element of uncertainty: it is not known how long this period of downtime will last. If it were for a week, perhaps one would be willing to accept it. “
The first time it was tolerated, but now …
“The first experience of the confinement from the point of view of social cohesion was positive, it was tolerated, but it was thought that it was over,” he adds. The so-called second wave was expected, and many are angry that apparently nothing has been done to prevent closure.
In observation it would be good to keep “those most affected by the restrictions, but less by the disease, so it is difficult to have to give up certain social experiences, for example.” But also “people who do not have a permanent job, up to the age of 40. They are more willing, if they do not have a minimum of protection, to a dangerous exasperation ”.
