It looks like a Heart Book story in the Covid era. The mother who was letting herself die saved by her daughters who cheer her on from the windows on the ground floor of the hospital. It looks like a story of Heart book in the moment of COVID-19. The mother who was letting herself die saved by her daughters who cheer her on from the windows on the ground floor of the hospital. There was not even a De Amicis that updates From the Apennines to the Andes, where, as many will remember, it was the arrival of the son that convinced the mother to face the operation that saved her life.
But it is not just literature, it is not just writing, more or less affable. It really happened, in the hospital Saint Donat of Arezzo, the only structure COVID-19 of the province, a point of reference that cared for up to 120 hospitalized patients in the worst moments of November plus a score in intensive care. Gioconda Actually, she is one of them: 73 years old, originally from Aretino Valdarno, a housewife, a life of work behind her back, as her daughter Manuela, who is not afraid to put the head of infectious diseases, Danilo Tacconi, now tells. An always active woman, “who never stood still from five to midnight, in the kitchen as if mowing the lawn.”
Forty days ago, here is Covid, fever, pneumonia, the inevitable hospitalization in San Donato, first in infectious diseases then in intensive care hell and vice versa, including the transition to sub-intensive with helmet. The lady does not skimp on complications, not even septicemia. The usual odyssey. The difference is that the mother improves clinically, but she no longer wants to know how to live. Just as she is recovering from Covid, doctors and nurses see her let go: she refuses food and drugs, rips the needles out of her arms.
Tacconi and his colleagues no longer know what to invent until the end of last week comes to mind “hugging window”, in the model of the “cuddle room”. Not a room to see each other, in short, but a window called by the two daughters, Manuela and Maura. Saturday is the first day of this never-before-thought therapy, a makeshift but effective remedy against contagious loneliness in armored hospitals like bunkers.
“I don’t know how I didn’t cry when I saw my mother – says Manuela, one of the two daughters -. The last time was at the beginning of November. She lives on the floor below mine. She had begun to have symptoms of the flu. and on November 3, I found her unconscious in the house. She had a high fever and she didn’t recognize me. “But more than the daughters’ excitement, what counts is the mother’s whip, who sees the signs outside the window on the floor. He comes down, to which his bed has been placed, sees the words “We love you”, “We miss you” and comes out of the catalepsy to which he had abandoned himself: he eats again, accepts the medicines. He will do it, the doctors say De Amicis could not write better.
