Covid, mass vaccination in Tuscany. Stumbling vials, times are slipping

Florence, December 27, 2020 – After day V today will start the mass vaccination campaign. The first phase, dedicated to the protection of the RSA health population and hosts, should begin the January 4th, although there are still no official confirmations on the date.

Is a’operation of extraordinary complexity cit will be a stress test for the healthcare system. But even before we start, we are behind the regional plan and the schedule released for the first phase. The possibility that, in mid-February, the 116,240 people led by the commissioner Domenico Arcuri had agreed to send the doses: twice as much is needed to ensure immunization with a second injection to be given about 21 days after the first.

But times pass, because the vials will stumble from Belgium via Pomezia: at least according to what has been established so far, 27,500 doses will arrive on December 31, 24,500 on January 4, 28,300 on 11, 24,400 on 18 and 31,200 on 25 for a total of 135,900. A total of 232,480 should arrive. The green light from the EMA (the European drug agency) is expected for the second American vaccine for January 6: after that date, the Moderna doses could also start to arrive. But whoever gets vaccinated with a drug must make the second injection with it. Having two such different vaccines to administer simultaneously will add to the complexity of the organization.

But with this chill planned so far, it is not possible to open reservation agendas in a single solution for all operators. For this reason, the Region is thinking of dividing the first phase into at least two sections: in the first, as of January 4, only hospital operators (public and private nursing homes), some 42 thousand people, would be called to vaccinate . While the 8,500 operators and 12,900 guests of the nursing homes would be vaccinated directly inside the structures. Much more time will be lost. With this system, in fact, vaccination times will be extended: as of January 4, some 8,000 daily vaccinations will be carried out in Tuscany, with a single vaccination point per hospital.

For this reason, the governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, with the regional adviser for the right to health, Simone Bezzini, called Commissioner Arcuri with whom the Region has opened an interlocutory phase. You work hard to get more doses sooner. “We have a war machine, I am proud of the organization we have created,” says Giani. But the undertaking is far from simple. With this astonishing and almost half of the people to be vaccinated for the first time with the doses that will arrive with shipment after January 25, there is a risk of completing the first phase in the second week of March, almost a month late. compared to the first predictions.
