Coronavirus, the circulation of the virus is at risk of increasing with the reopening of schools and universities. Dangers for young people due to their tendency to socialize. There is a danger that they will transmit the virus to the family environment, infecting their elderly and vulnerable relatives. What can be found in Covid hospitals in Sardinia. This is the opinion of Giovanni Sotgiu, professor of medical statistics and expert of the technical-scientific committee of the Region.
Precisely today in Sardinia a young man from Isili died: he was 33 years old and he was infected in a restaurant on the Emerald Coast. “I do not know the case in detail, I cannot say anything about the real absence of comorbidity or conditions that may have favored death,” says Sotgiu, “however, I remember that the first case of death in Sardinia was also presented as a case of the death of a young subject was actually affected by severe obesity that had favored death.
From the point of view of the probabilities we can consider very rare cases of people who died in the absence of full-blown pathologies, but then some of these after a detailed post-mortem evaluation highlighted “predisposing conditions”, that is, those same people they did not know, in life, to have critical problems that later revealed themselves only after death.
After today’s tragedy, should young Sardinians be afraid?
No. They have to be calm. It is important not to generate alarmism, as it happened in March and February. I say to people in their thirties and forties that they must be aware of the risks that weaker people such as their grandparents or parents can carry, who perhaps due to age can more easily go from a symptomatic condition to a disease. They have to think of the weak and vulnerable and also of themselves. Because we still do not know the virus and above all we have not known the real potential regarding the clinical consequences. Given this, an attitude of prudence is essential for everyone.
Are we facing a second wave in Sardinia?
I would not talk about the second wave. Because the first never came out permanently. There have also been zero deaths or infections, but the virus has continued to circulate at very low levels. The arrival of tourists, such as Sardinians returning from a trip abroad (see Nurri’s case), has increased the circulation of the virus in Sardinia. And so today we are facing multiple widespread outbreaks, we are at the end of September and we are facing an autochthonous circulation. It is no longer a summer influence linked to the tourist flow. If I have to reduce the circulation of the virus, I have to try to control the borders, I have to make sure that no contagious people arrive in Sardinia to feed the current circulation. This was the meaning of President Solinas’ ordinance.
Are we facing an epidemiological emergency here in Saradegna?
At the moment I think that in a context like the European and Italian, not talking about epidemiological emergency would be a mistake. There are intensive care units attended and it is important to consider the evolution of the situation: in Spain, France and England the situation is worsening. The opening of schools and universities has contributed to the circulation of the virus and I am afraid that with the opening of schools the circulation will resume here in Sardinia. I say this as an epidemiologist. In England, the reopening of schools and universities has led to an increase of 167%, in the United States the peak is sustained in counties where there are colleges and universities, if measures are not implemented in schools and universities, especially in young people, who have a very strong sociability, take risks. Sadly, young people who have moved around a lot over the summer have brought the virus back into their families and these sick family members are helping fill the Pulmonology, Infectious Disease and Resuscitation beds.
Will there be a new blockade in Sardinia?
This is a political election. If there is a significant escalation, it will be necessary to tighten control measures, especially where sociality is relevant and where individual and collective protection measures are not taken. Because by respecting the protection measures, we favor the collapse of the virus circulation. Unfortunately, however, in the summer people did not comply with the measures and this contributed significantly to spread the circulation of the virus.
