Swabs in private laboratories: 24 hours from inception to payment services requested by citizens and authorized by Region are approximately 1,500 tests reserved and carried out in analysis centers of the territorial network. These are large super-equipped structures, equipped with specific organizational requirements and special machinery to extract and amplify the viral genome. Centers that can have specialized personnel capable of handling with due security SARS-CoV-2. In this first phase of commissioning, some thirty laboratories have been put into operation: 25 were already in operation, selected last April through a competition Soresa but authorized only in early September to perform limited swabs to employees of private companies and sports clubs at the request of preventive and sports doctors. Now this possibility is extended to everyone: a doctor’s request is not necessary and the costs are borne by the patients. In the coming days, with the arrival of supplies of reagents and materials, the structures equipped with the requirements to be carried out will increase again to about seventy but in the future it will be possible 300 equipped laboratories. By calculating an average of 100 requests per day for each lab, the swab ratio can easily reach and double that of the public network, exceeding 10,000 per day. A precious help, at this stage, to regain ground compared to the other Italian regions that constantly carry out more tests than Campania.

Meanwhile, in Naples there are still queues and queues at the Frullone where the metropolitan ASL has made available four stations that from 8 in the morning, until the afternoon, perform the tests reserved and requested by doctors and prevention departments. Access is by reservation only and only for the asymptomatic, but dozens of people flock to spend the night in a car lined up and waiting for the doors to open in the morning. Self-managed files by entering name and number in order of arrival in sheets attached to the entrance door. “I’ve been here since one in the morning – says a man accompanied by his wife who got out of the car to smoke a cigarette – and I have the number 62 and when I got here there was already traffic.” The established structure to the old Frullone mental hospital guarantees a thousand tests a day to those who have been admitted by their doctor in the regional IT platform. For symptomatic patients, on the other hand, a swab is provided at home through the teams of the Usca units (Special Continuity Care Units). But there are many spontaneous accesses by those who ask to be subjected to hyssop, believing that they have symptoms or have been in contact with infected people. These people really need to go to the doctor. The swabs now accessible in the network of private laboratories will allow to eliminate a substantial part of the requests. The costs, controlled, are borne by the client (about 60 euros). In all the laboratories of the accredited network, it has already been possible to carry out the dosage, in venous blood samples, of anti-Coronavirus antibodies. A non-diagnostic test, unlike the swab, which is mainly used to find out if you have come into contact, in the recent past, with Covid and if you have developed immunity.
Both the results (positive or negative) of the blood tests and those of the swabs are notified to the patient (by email) and through the computer server to the network of local health authorities in charge of monitoring and quarantine. The computer platform with the list of positives is accessible and can also be consulted by family doctors who have the task of taking care of symptomatic cases. Meanwhile, the work of doctors in hospitals and on the home care front is getting more intense. Campania is currently the region with the most positives (9,697 in total) that is 168 per 100,000 inhabitants against 157 in Sardinia and Lazio with Lombardy at 110 and Veneto at 112. Campania, with 769 cases identified yesterday compared to 9,549 swabs, it registers 8% positives compared to swabs, about double the national value and yesterday also a high number of deaths, 5 in a single day, never so many since May 8. The number of intensive care units employed increased from 55 to 63 and, at the moment, Campania is the Italian region with the highest number of patients in intensive care. A scenario in which 37 out of 110 places are free in intensive care and 171 out of 747 are free in ordinary hospitalization. But with the current progression in one month, around 300 intensive care places and around 1200 ordinary hospital places will be needed.
