Despite everything, the first signs of stress are beginning to be felt in hospitals. During the weekend in Cotugno he struggled to hospitalize new patients, especially at night, and the newcomers, during the morning, found accommodation in a hospital bed.

The patients arrived with 118 and with their own means and almost all suffering from pneumonia of Covid. Even in the Cardarelli and Ospedale del Mare the situation is not rosy, there is no line of cars and ambulances outside the emergency room, but there is overcrowding and the elimination of patients under observation is progressing with great difficulty. Everyone fears the third wave, thanks to the spread of the English variant of which obvious traces have been found in Campania in 25 percent of the swabs analyzed by Cotugno and the Portici Zooprophylactic Institute. The crisis unit also met yesterday to take stock of the situation. The river of the sick grows inexorably and everyone hopes that it will not rain. This is the most appropriate metaphor to describe the scenario in which the Campania Covid assistance network operates. The greatest stress is suffered in the territory of Asl Napoli 3 sud but it is the entire metropolitan area of Naples that is in a state of maximum alert. Al Cotugno with 300 places available only in resuscitation there is capacity. The wards travel in constant balance between new entries and patient discharges, sometimes still positive, to free up space. Cotugno is also helping Cardarelli, who receives many cases in the emergency room. Here the inmates went from 137 on Saturday to 144 yesterday and there are 7 free places out of 14 in intensive care. The pressure on the emergency room remains intense. The same scenario is recorded in the Ospedale del Mare where, in the emergency room, during the weekend, there was a real assault between Covid and non-Covid patients: hospitalizations increase and it is difficult to find a place for transfer in the wards where the subintensive is saturated and there is only one place in the hospital. In Loreto the seats can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Even at the Collinare Polyclinic, the occupancy rate of 50 percent four days ago has risen from yesterday’s rate of 75 percent: one room is full, in another there are only 2 empty beds out of the 14 available, and in third 4 of those of 14, while in intensive and resuscitation units the margins are wider. The main concern is Napoli 3 sud: here there are areas and centers with a high incidence and we are trying to understand if the English variant is involved. “More and more cases have respiratory complications,” warns the company’s health director, Gaetano D’Onofrio, “also because family doctors better care for patients at home and only the most complex cases arrive here.”
Still stuck in the emergency room, the other night, in Castellammare where the third floor has been reopened with 8 places in addition to the 14 occupied in Obi (in total 22 hospitalized). Works in progress in Boscotrecase that in 2 or 3 days will double the capacity while 11 beds have already been opened on the fourth floor, and another 20 monitored per second, going from 22 to 52, plus 8 resuscitation units and 3 doctors have arrived since Torre del Greco and 3 of Castellammare.
