The new wave of coronavirus does not seem to slow down its streak: the latest coronavirus bulletin from the Ministry of Health confirms the worrying trend of a constant increase in the number of new positive cases. 35,098 infections have been detected in the last 24 hours, almost 11,000 in Lombardy and 580 sadly have died. And the specter of a new national blockade is looming: according to the latest rumors, the decisive day is November 15.
A hypothesis not so remote and shouted by those on the front line to face the emergency. In most hospitals the situation is very serious: many Lombard structures, especially Milanese and Brianza, do not know how long they will be able to withstand a pressure that shows no signs of abating.
“We can’t bear even a week”
Antonio Voza, head of first aid and emergency medicine at the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Milan, explains to Corriere della Sera that if the flow of accesses does not diminish in the short term, “we cannot last even a week. We are in a very big mess.” Patients, explains the 47-year-old doctor, who specializes in diseases of the respiratory system, remain up to 48 hours waiting for a bed: “We would need a large hand from the structures of the territory at a lower intensity, but the network is now struggling to distribute the patients “.
A total of 545 patients are admitted to Humanitas during these hours: “260 beds, almost half, are occupied by Covid patients, of which 24 are in intensive care,” says Voza. Managing “130-140 accesses a day, of which about 50 for respiratory problems” is a challenge bordering on the impossible. There is a difference compared to March: “Those who come to the emergency room are somewhat less committed: in spring more than half went to intensive care”.
Rings: “The National Health Service Can’t Do It”
Filippo Anelli, president of the National Federation of Orders of Surgeons and Dentists, also says he is “worried and scared” in the interview with Corriere della Sera: “If this continues, the National Health Service cannot do it. Each bed dedicated to Covid is taken away from patients with other pathologies, commonly called ordinary. Apart from the ordinary ones. They have pancreatic tumors, strokes, serious heart diseases.”
In short, the risk of collapse, from a hospital point of view, is not low at all. That is why Anelli also calls for a total blockade in Italy: “The Italians have not understood that ending up in the yellow zone, where mitigation measures are less strict than in the oranges and reds, is not the same as being able to do one’s own convenience” .
And then he adds: “The worst is yet to come.” When? According to Anelli. “Between Christmas and early 2021, flu cases will be added to those of Covid and the emergency room will be full of people with the same symptoms and fear of having caught the coronavirus.”
The solution? A new generalized total blockade: only in this way, according to Anelli, could the peak of the second wave be reached in a couple of weeks “and the decline would begin with the progressive decongestion of hospitals.
