The cardiology department of theSacco Hospital in Milan was emptied of patients due to a Covid-19 outbreak. Several healthcare workers and hospitalized patients tested positive for the swab. coronavirus: among them a doctor, 20 nurses and 5 patients.
Two weeks ago the positivity of a nurse who works in Cardiology, subjected to a swab after having mild flu symptoms. Subsequently, carpet swabs were made from which the spread of infection among various healthcare workers emerged.
“Everything goes back to fifteen days ago, with an employee of ours who had symptoms: we’re pretty sure the source of the infection is outside the hospital “he explains Lucia Castellani, Medical Director of Sacco. A situation that, despite all the precautions and recommendations, is also complicated by the extra work contacts of some employees of that department. “We closed the admission of Cardiology. The 5 patients in the ward who contracted the virus were transferred to infectious diseases, the others are under health surveillance. The environments are cleaned regularly and we have all the extraordinary measures that we have assumed that the cluster can be closed in a few days with the controls at the end of the quarantines », adds Castellani.
The President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, announced that “the temporary sanitary facilities installed in the pavilions of the Milan and Bergamo Fairs will reopen in the coming days and will guarantee the Lombard system the first 201 additional intensive care beds, which will be progressively occupied ». The Board that has launched a specific provision in this regard, proposed by the Councilor for Social Welfare, Giulio Gallera.
The provision comes at a time when, on the one hand, the Lombardy Region is launching a new ordinance imposing a “curfew” from 11 pm to 5 am every day, starting Thursday (here the full text), and Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has explicitly warned citizens (“If the virus breaks out in a big city like Milan, the effect is disturbing”), on the other hand there are worrying data from the hospitals. Many hospitals in the Lombard capital “are already in trouble”: if before it was the city that lent a hand to the most affected areas -as it is written here-, now it is Bergamo, Brescia, Lodi and Cremona to offer beds to the new patients from the metropolis.
In Lombardy, in the last 24 hours, 4,126 new cases have been registered, 1,858 of which in the province of Milan: figures in great growth compared to the previous day.
