English variant: Japan suspends sports concessions
The Japanese government is preparing to suspend the program that guaranteed special entry facilities for athletes and their personnel from various nations who were scheduled to spend a period of competitive preparation in the country in anticipation of the Olympic Games scheduled for this summer. This is anticipated by sources familiar with the Kyodo agency dossier, explaining that the decision is linked to the risks of the spread of the coronavirus, specifically the new English variant. The decision could sanction several sports delegations. The Tokyo government has already notified the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and the relevant sports federations; the suspension must remain in effect until January 31, in line with the border closure decided last Monday for all foreign citizens who do not have a residence permit. Japanese athletes who have special authorization to train and participate in competitions abroad must undergo a two-week period of self-isolation upon return to Japan, if they come from countries considered at risk such as Great Britain, South Africa, Italy, Belgium and France.
